NEW YORK (CBS) They're the hottest selling SUVs on the road but CBS 2 has uncovered a shocking defect with the brand new Ford Explorer. Half a million Explorers have already been sold in 2004 but a hidden problem is plaguing owners and dealers.
CBS 2s Kirstin Cole reports.
Many dealers refused to even talk to us about this problem. But a local dealer is seeing one in every 10 of the SUVs come back for repairs and those drivers are the lucky ones. Because in dealerships across the country -- not only can't they identify the problem -- they're not fixing it.
And it's leaving drivers and their safety in the lurch.
Millions of them own the roads. The Ford Explorer is the best selling SUV by a mile. But the 2004 model year is making some drivers nervous.
"They should let the consumers know with the 2004," one female driver said. "They should notify me and let me know what problems I could expect," says 2004 Explorer owner Roger Carilli.
Shortly after the 2004 explorer was released, the complaints started rolling in of a transmission problem as the car was moved between drive and reverse. Loud bangs and long delays between shifting gears were being reported.
"There's a clunk in the transmission, Carilli recalled. And is there a delay before it engages? Cole asked. Yeah," he replied.
Here at Smith-Cairns Ford, they first saw the problem in July and were flooded with dozens of complaints last month.
Service manager Phil Coiro oversees more than a hundred repairs daily. Anything that's abnormal is disconcerting," he told CBS 2....read morehide11 out of 13 people found this review helpful.

Toyota unveils lofty sales goals, closing gap fast with No. 1 GM
By Christine Tierney / The Detroit News
Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Co.p. delivered a thinly veiled challenge to General Motors Corp. along with its second-quarter earnings Monday.
For the fiscal year ending next March, Toyota expects to boost global sales by 7 percent, to 7.2 million vehicles. Next year, it aims to expand sales by 18 percent, to 8.5 million vehicles - just shy of GM's 2003 sales.
For years now, industry experts tracking Toyota's steep gains and GM's slower pace have predicted that the Japanese automaker would eventually overtake GM to become the world's biggest car company...read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

then it's a good deal. Otherwise, it's not a 30,000 vehicle which is what they have it listed for. The blind spot is rather big (even for an suv) and it's hard to find a stripped down 4x4 version of it. Fully loaded it retails for about 35k and why would you spend 35k on an explorer? It's an above average vehicle but unless you get that huge money back deal, I just don't see it being worth it. Try test driving a Tahoe, I own one of those as well and I think you'll find it's much more pleasurable to drive IMHO....read morehide

I loved my 2000 Ford Explorer. I was in a recent auto accident (I was driving my family in the diamond lane, another SUV lost control of their vehicle & plowed into my passenger's door) though I felt out of control & was hit again I spun, across the freeway & landed on all 4 tires on the right hand embankment facing oncoming traffic. My daughters & I walked away bruised, shaken & my perfect car was totaled. Within a week I bought a new 2004 Ford Explorer. I am sad that I lost my 2000, but extremely happy that it protected my family. I do love my new Explorer. Ford made great improvements since 2000. I feel like I am driving a car not a truck. Thank You God & Thank You Ford....read morehide

This car is a great help because all we have to do is put our gear in the back in stead of having to take the back seat out like we would in a van. My son likes it better because he can just throw his hockey gear in the back in stead of putting it in the back of a van. It's perfect for town use because its not long and has power steering....read morehide

This is the 4th Explorer I've owned and I love it more than all of its predecessors. Its ride is almost flawless and the independent rear suspension is an absolute dream. Excellent power and handling and a 3rd row seat make this an excellent family vehicle. Tried to step up to a Tahoe and I just didnt like it anywhere as much as I do my Explorer. Plus Im getting 26.35 miles to the gallon on the highway with my 4.0L. Highly Recommended!!! A+++ Ford....read morehide
