Toyota unveils lofty sales goals, closing gap fast with No. 1 GM

Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Co.p. delivered a thinly veiled challenge to General Motors Corp. along with its second-quarter earnings Monday.
For the fiscal year ending next March, Toyota expects to boost global sales by 7 percent, to 7.2 million vehicles. Next year, it aims to expand sales by 18 percent, to 8.5 million vehicles - just shy of GM's 2003 sales.
For years now, industry experts tracking Toyota's steep gains and GM's slower pace have predicted that the Japanese automaker would eventually overtake GM to become the world's biggest car company
