2008 Ford Explorer 4X4 User Reviews
XLT 4.0L shown

- 4X4 and slick road contols work very very well
First 5000 miles car runs excellent and with no problems. Quality control has improved to an excellent level. Fuel economy in range of 19 to 21 mpg. Great car for our needs. Second one we have owned. Last one has 165k and still going strong.

- Comfortable size, good power, no mechanical issues in many miles including offroad
- Fuel economy could be better, but all 4x4's have this problem
I've owned seven Explorers--for the price class, they're hard to beat in comfort and dependability. Trade-in values are a weak spot, though--the Pathfinders and 4-Runners do much better.

- quiet,power,comfort,gadgets,adjustable pedal and seat memory,no flaws
- gas guzzler
My second Explorer,I still have the 1997 XLT with over 100k and I've spent less than $2000 in 11 years for service work outside of scheduled maintenance; oil/filter,aligment,tires,battery,etc.
This 2008 Eddie Bauer is remarkable for a nice quiet ride, power, and seat comfort. I also notice the stability on cornering is much better than my '97....read morehide

- wonderful ride, fits my family perfectly, interior very comfortable, third seat invaluable
- louder than I would like but not significant
LOVE THE CAR! It fits my teenage children and also allows for Grandparents and a dog. Yet, When a client is in my car I receive multiple compliments regarding the heighth, comfort, and overall pleasant experience. (They enjoy the automatic foot boards.)
It feels safe and comfortable. It is perfect to travel in to Chicago or to New Orleans. I have owned multiple Fords (Mustang, Escape, Aerostar, F-150, Excursion) and others (Volvo, Volkswagen, Chrysler) but by far this is my favorite....it is a true joy to drive. Everything is at my finger tips....read morehide

- This is the gold standard for mid-sized SUVs
- Needs a power port in the cargo area
My Explorer has the V-6 and I get 18/mpg which is pretty good for this type of vehicle. On occasion, for my work I have to go off road-- and this is definitely the vehicle for that. The Explorer just loves rutted dirt roads, fields and snow covered back roads. Then all it needs is a car wash and I look sharp showing up at a nice restaurant after work.
The navigation system and Sync technology are so easy to use that even a Cave Man could do it.
Not even sure if it is an option, but I wish Ford would put a 9V power port in the cargo area. Fortunately there is power port in the middle row seating area so it is only a mild inconvenience-- not a deal breaker....read morehide

- Beautiful SUV, excellent gas mileage, smooth, quiet ride even on rough roads, great technology
This is the best SUV I have owned. It does great on rough roads, in town, or the highway. My family has taken it on several trips and the kids love the DVD player which they can also use their playstation on. My husband and I love the wireless headphones so we can listen to our music while they watch a movie. The inside trim is classy and contemporary. We get lots of compliments on the look of the interior. Our friends with a Lexus like our interior better. No complaints here - we love it!...read morehide

- Engine loud, accelaration bad, etc. Do not buy
Wouldn't even give it a chance. Worst SUV in the world...
Wished I bought a more fuel efficient SUV. The Explorer only had 10 city and 14 highway!!!!! Compared to other SUVs with the same features, they have a much better economy... 17 city, 21 hwy.

- Solid truck off road, very comfortable for tall people, quiet,
- Poor fuel economy. Do not buy this truck for fuel efficiency. 12mpg with 4.0
Have had the truck for a year and no problems. I have taken it off road and it performed very well.

- Roomy front and middle row seats, adequate power with the 4.6L
- Less than 13mpg around town, cheap reflective plastic and chrome interior
Recently had a 2008 Explorer XLT 4.6 as a loaner car for 3 weeks while my wife's Volvo XC-90 was being repaired after an accident. Overall this vehicle is about what I would expect for a new car from about 1996. Decent overall appearance although it certainly lags behind even other Fords in the modernity department. Reasonably roomy in the front and middle but the third row is not too useful unless you have very small kids, but I guess thats the way with most third row seating, its more a gimmick than anything else. Also, dont use the power folding feature for the third row unless the car is warm. The car was given to us with the third row up and we didnt need it since it makes the cargo area otherwise useless......well, it was a cold morning here in Fairbanks, Alaska and I activated the folding motor and it squealed, folded about 1/3 of the way down and stopped. Thats where it stayed until we turned it in last week.
One thing that was particularly annoying was the very bright shade of yellow- Im sure its suppose to be beige or something, but to me it was yellow or bright gold interior- seats, dashboard, door inlays. The dash is very long stretching out to the windshield so if you are driving into the sun the bright yellow plastic of the dash reflects into the windshield giving your a lovely mirror image of the defrost vents and plastic expanse between the steering wheel and the glass. You can imagine that this impares your vision enough to sometimes have to pull over or make an unplanned turn to avoid this dangerous glare. In addition to this annoying and potentially dangerous feature, there is the just plain cheap aspect of the interior trim. If you like chrome colored plastic then you will love the Explorer! The shift lever is as big around as a beer can and as chromey as it gets. Its such a weird choice to have all these ridiculously cheap plasti-chrome accents along with an otherwise leather clad interior. The HUGE door pulls are also big, round and chrome, they look so out of place, like they got them off a Winnebago motorhome.
We didnt have any real trouble with the Explorer, it only had about 1800 miles on it when we got it so it was new. Compared to our XC-90 the Explorer felt antiquated, rough and cheap. Its mileage was very sad at around 12.5-13.5 around town and less than 17 on the highway. On cold days the trip computer noted an average of 8.8, our Dodge Cummins diesel work truck gets better than that! There were many counter intuitive features such as the latches to release the middle seats, better not try and do it with one hand (while the other one has groceries in it) because you will either smash your hand or eject the seat with such force that it could damage the front seat as it smashes into it! I am not kidding! Just hope your kid doesnt try and pull this maneuver....read morehide
