- Dated styling and high seat position
Took a gamble and traded in my aging 1998 BMWci convertible, an excellent car, for a Focus ST a week ago. The Beemer needed more repairs than justified by remaining value. Considered a basic closeout 2007 Focus sedan or hatch for the low cost and Ford incentives. My thinking was to buy an interim car for two years or so until next generation hybrids or, even better, European diesels come to the market. Considered Civic, but too expensive at a decent trim level, and Fit, which is a superb small car, but a little small and light for L.A. freeways, for me at least. Reviews of the ST were positive and we visited the dealership. Spousal Acceptance Factor was immediate. Car is not small at all, and bears little resemblance to the more common Focus hatchbacks. Impressed by features, trunk and spaciousness, and overly plush seats. Not much downside to a gamble on an America car after four BMW's, including a late model 325i at home. After fair trade-in and incentives, the price was mid-$14,000s, which more than met my cheapness quota. I did not bother test driving the car. No regrets after 400 miles of mixed driving. Car is fast, level, handles very, very well. Shifter is a little notchy and moves funny between 3rd and 4th, but it's fine. Clutch is fine, and the power train functions very well. Impressive performance off the line and excellent braking. My overall take of the 2007 Focus ST is very favorable, while mindlful of the quirks: It's a generic Focus sedan boosted with steroids, better power and breaking; seats are very comfortable, though the siiting position is high and the driver's seat should be able to go back another inch or two. Interior ST styling is acceptable. Exterior is acceptable with the street appearance package, but ... this is a dated design compared to competitors. No matter. I like the car and find it a worthy domestic successor to the manual BMW's I've had for a long time. I will be careful with latches and restrict use of power window controls, and be careful with the key/ignition swithc, per complaints about parts quality and overall cheapness. But overall, a pleaser after only a week.
