2005 Ford Freestar Wagon
There are 9 user reviews for the SEL trim shown below
- Solid firm ride, roomy, good features, safe, good torque, built very well
- not a fuel sipper especially in town
Purchased As Used
We've had our van now about 9 mos and love it. (Briefly had a Chevy Venture which is a piece of junk and rattles terribly.) The FREESTAR no doubt looks similiar to the WINDSTAR but it is much improved - we test drove them both.
No it is not as refined as the Chrysler or Japanese or even the latest Korean offerings. But it is cheaper than the Chrysler and Japanese models and has more leg room in the front (which is important to me at 6 2) than all the Asian models. And it offers adjustable gas/brake pedals - a very useful feature for my 5 1 wife. Ours also has power doors on both sides, 6 CD changer, leather quad seats and some other goodies. And yes, the 3rd row folds nicely into the floor. Despite the fact that there are brackets sticking out, I was able to haul a good size entertainment center/cabinet.
We hauled 4 adults, 2 kids and a boatload of luggage - no problem and everyone was comfortable. NOTE: If possible, get one with quad seating (2nd row captain's chairs..much better than the bench).
As stated, this van is not the most economical. Around town 14-15, on the highway 20-23 mpg are about it. But it is also the heaviest minivan weighing in at 4200 lbs empty and has a the largest engine in its class (4.2 L). That means a solid, firm ride and PLENTY of low end torque - it will only help the engine to last longer. Very seldom do I need to rev it above 3000 rpm and then only to merge onto the freeway. Once on the freeway, 80 is effortless. Up hills, sufficient low end torque....
Yes, this van drives a bit more like a small truck....not terribly sporty in curves but solid and pretty quiet on the road. But then who am I going to race in a minivan?
Again, overall we're very happy....read morehide

- Very comfortable quite ride. Wonderful ergonomics and price with rebates!
- Actually none so far. Local dealer has been outstandnig.
Love the overall fit and finish of the new 05 Freestar. My 2 children ages 8 and 10 love riding the "space shuttle" with automatic doors
and DVD system.
Very pleased with the comfortable ride, and build quality which compares to my previous BMW! (Very surprised) There is nothig I would change on this vehicle except for more color choices. A Forest or Dark Green would be great....read morehide

- fits the family but my truck did get better gas mileage(2000 F150 4X4) 14.5 in town.
- VERY POOR GAS MILEAGE. DEWEY FORD in Ankeny Iowa did not stand behind the vehicle.
Room, reasonably comfortable, EXTREMELY POOR GAS MILEAGE. I have been to the dealership a couple of times and complained about the mileage, but the dealer doesn't seem to care.

- leather interior has held up to it's fair share of abuse from two toddlers who are now eight and ten
- suspension too soft, car sounds like it's on a resporator, weak rear
Overall one of the worst cars that I have ever owned. Bought the car new. It has had two ac compressors replaced, rear ac still doesnt work. At 57k miles the transmission needs replacing a common problem On these vehicles my neighbor has an 2003 giving him transmission problems also. Problems with power steering pump also fluid was contaminated from the factory. I have renamed my car as a suckwind because it is pathetic and this is a garaged kept automobile with regular serviced performed. I bought this through my brother in-law on ford A-plan. By far the worst car decision we have ever made, my other neighbor has a honda 1999 odesey, what a great vehicle compared to my 1999 windstar....read morehide

- its almost all cons this time..
Windstar owner for 6 years. Comfortable, quiet, had 4 break problems over this time plus other stuff but generally well used for trips , hauling and the like. Well time for a new one. rented freestar sel for trip to cleveland. Dissapointed. Breaks sluggish to respond. And then too much breaking made it unweildy at intersections and on freeway. VERY noisy wind at freeway speeds makes it hard to talk and listen to the radio. which was sub par in my estimation and im no hi-fi nut. I feel sorry for any long legged people. Seemed cramped by comparison to the windstar. Dash is higher and more flat on top and lower underneath making it difficult to get legs underneath. I Like the fold and tumble seats, but they were overly stiff and too firm to want to sit on for so long. Glass was not tinted. made it hot in sunlight. Heat/air cond was irratic in that it fluctuated back and forth. Come on! this is simply too much stuff that should have been more like the windstar. I admit i had a DL series but even climbing into the back pinched my knees because of the slope down into the seat well. What the heck are all these nice reviews. If you're just looking for a van i guess this will do. But i really wanted to continue with this line but i m gone for good. Im going to shop and i recommend you rent for a day or 4 before you buy. Its worth every penny to really try it out before plunking down your cash....read morehide

- Overall my wife and I are very impressed with the Ford Freestar SEL 04.
- Plastic facade cracked on the back door. It's where the license plate rests and the handle is.
This minivan was a great value. We picked it up in mid Dec 04. Sticker 30.5k, purchased for under 20k. We have the 4.2L. Acceleration is excellent. The ride is comfortable, and there is plenty of cargo space. I got the deal b/c the 05 were already on the lot. Huge incentives(I let Ford pay for the depreciation). Btw, the service dept fix the plastic part without hestitation. Customer service was very good. Bottom line, for me, it wasn't worth spending 10k more for a comparable foreign minivan. However, I test drove the 3.9L SES Freestar and was not impressed with the acceleration. I picked up the SEL b/c it was a happy medium. It had most of the options I wanted and I saved thousands from the Limted. The Limited has a bit more wood trim than the SEL but he same 4.2L engine and the same rims unless you opt for 17in tires. The Limited was not worth the extra money!...read morehide
