Terrible Fuel mileage, with awesome power!!

by Allan Dore from Violet Hill,Arkansas (6/11/08)
Pros:terrible fuel mileage5.6 to 7.2 Pd cash for it, can,t afford to run it!!
Cons:Lots of Black smoke, replaced 3 radiators.

I saved my money bought the King Ranch, pd 58,000 for truck, its loaded, if fuel mileage can,t be improved, want to sell it for a loss.I haul 38 ft 5th wheel mobiletree elite with ease, my only problem is terrible fuel mileage, is there a cure for the milege? Other than the mileage, its the greatest truck i,ve ever owned.

Be prepared to get to know your service center

by Derek Naber from Burlington Wi (4/27/08)
Pros:looks good, comfortable seats
Cons:can't keep them out of the shop, fuel hungry

My 08 ford is constently in the shop. First the exhaust fell off the turbo, filling the cab with exhaust, Took the dealer a week and a half to fix it. had to take the whole cab off truck to get at it and fix it. Next it had a cracked raidiator caused a a clamp overtightend from the factory. Next one of the turbo's went out, down for one more whole week, Next an injector problem causing the trucks top speed at times to be 35 mph on the interstate. that was 4 days down. truck has 26000 miles on it and is 4 months old. sees nothing but inerstate driving everyday when its not in the shop and gets 7.1 mpg. truck has a utility bed on it , hardly ever tows, just carrys tools. Not rerecomended for anyone to buy this truck. The truck center I take it to always has a line of these things getting fixed. More often that not they know what the problem is becaus they have been seeing it so often on other trucks

Dangerous to use towing and poor fuel economy

by dk from SR,CA (12/07/07)
Pros:Good Turning Radius
Cons:Bucking/Surging when Towing

Severe bucking/surging when towing a ~12,500 lb. gooseneck living quarter trailer at 40 - 60 MPH. Gets so severe that brakes need to be applied to slow down or throttle needs to be floored.

~ 8 MPG empty and ~7 towing above trailer.

The best truck I have ever owned

by Tom from Quartz Hill , Cal (10/24/07)
Pros:It tows like no other pick up truck and the turning radius is better than any truck out there .
Cons:the fuel mileage is only 8.2 when towing a 19,000 lb trailer and 9.2 with out towing.

This would be the perfect truck if they would have put a gear vender in it so you can get the gearing for fuel economy and for pulling grades this truck with 488 gears and a automatic trans just dont pull hard enough up a grade with a 19,000 lb trailer up a slight grade I start loosing pulling power.

No better heavy duty pickup, top quality

by Carl from Prince Frederick, MD (9/28/07)
Pros:Strength for towing, comfortable, great fit/finish, great looks, options
Cons:Bit too much orange peel in paint, should come with locking gas cap

Many complain about the top speed of only 81mph, they fail to realize it is for a reason, that is the maximum speed the 19.5in. tires are rated for. Plus with the 4.88 gears, the engine is spinning pretty fast at that speed. And yes, this truck is not returning 18mpg on the highway, but what 18mpg truck can tow a 24,000lb trailer?? I tow a 44ft Teton rv with my 450 and it does a terrific job. Everything Ford told us this truck can do, it does. The interior is nicer than any other truck, including those badged with the Caddilac embems. Fantastic sounds from the Audiophile stereo. Great ride for a truck that can carry almost 6,000lbs in the bed. Turning radius better than any other truck, including the light duty 1/2 tons. Do it yourself maintenance very easy, oil change takes me maybe 15 minutes. I strongly recommend this truck if you are hauling a heavy truck camper or towing a very heavy gooseneck or fifth wheel. The F-450 was never designed as a street cruiser but it sure turns the heads.

I like my truck. I haul and tow myself with it.

by Peter from Florida (9/10/07)
Pros:Very large and Comfortable, F-1 acceleration and gear swish, turns on a dime
Cons:goes only 81-82 mph! cruise control max at 78? fuel econ city 10-12 mph bad. hwy 7-9 mph worse

My pros and cons says it all. Cruise control only activates to a max of 78 mph, that is ok, but it only goes to 81-82 mph w/ the pedal to the metal. I wish it could go to a max speed of at least 95 mph, at least. On the hwy, every body pass you by! Fuel economy is better in the city, 10-12 mph, than on the hwy, 7-9 mph, this is contrary to what is common in other engines, what is that? I don't get this! This is a diesel engine, it is supossed to be "more economic" on the hwy! The truck does look very good, and rides good too. We tried 350 Dogde and Chevy. F-450 was more impressive to my and my wife. Chevy was Lame, Dodge too jumpy. This had better numbers over all and it seems was 100% American, from Kentucky. (Does this count). I love it despite the little things mentioned, and it is BIG!
