- Great engine versatile enough for towing, cargo & 8 passengers.
- Difficult/expensive to fix, outdated design,
I bought a new Safari back in 2001. It is truly a great vehicle and serves its purpose well whether it be hauling cargo, towing a trailer, transporting 8 passengers or all of the above. The 4.3L V6 is a great motor and will run forever with proper maintenance. It handled good and for a boxy truck design, had a decent ride to it. The Safari also had some nice features such as rear side panel storage, full instrumentation, auto headlights and wide dutch doors.
However, In 4 years, I had to replace the rear heater control, dutch door weatherstripping & carpet (due to leaks) mass air flow sensor, rear heat/AC/wiper switches, serpentine belt, power door lock actuators, vacuum diaphram and a transmission. My warranty expired in 2003 and ironically, that's when I noticed thing starting to break. Many of the interior plastics & fit/finish items are fragile and tend to break easily.
I highly recommend buying the extended warranty along with this vehicle.
