When I bought my shiny new 2005 Accord coupe, my 1991 Accord coupe had 280,000 miles. I thought "How much longer can the old girl last?" Monty Python references not withstanding, five years later, my '91 shows 380,000 on the odometer!
While still 320,000 miles shy of it's predecessor, the "new" Accord has so far been flawless, and hopefully promises to be just as reliable.
I find the 160 horses coaxed from the 2.4 liter four cylinder, transmitted via the silky smooth clutch to be more than adequate to garner attention from local and state law enforcement! Who needs a V-6? While it's very comfortable traveling, at highway speeds, the road noise is "Hondalike", pegging the decibel meter a few points higher than competitors. It will be interesting to see if the noise lowers when I finally wear out the OEM Bridgestone Turanzas.
If I manage to keep my speed to a steady 70mph on a long trip I have been rewarded with 37 mpg on repeated occasions, but low to mid thirties is more the norm in mixed driving. While new automatic transmissions are eons ahead of the old slushboxes of decades past, I'm still convinced a standard shift car gets better mileage in real world driving.
In my opinion the slight performance difference versus the pricier maintenance and initial cost of a V-6 doesn't offer good value. Everything is more expensive when maintaining the V-6 and don't forget there are twice the amount of exhaust pipes and mufflers to replace!
With the advent of side curtain airbags comes the disadvantage of having the visibility being curtailed by that fat A-pillar. More than once an oncoming car has hidden in the blind spot so that repeated head bobbing is required to make sure the way is clear when pulling out from a side street. While not restricted to Honda, curious looped logic is implemented when an accident caused by the obstruction of an airbag, is cushioned by that very airbag. So much for government mandates...
I know most folks don't keep their cars long enough to see four timing belt swaps but I do like the fact that the new engine doesn't require many hundreds of dollars, or a day of wrenching every 90,000 miles. Similarly, it is nice to see one doesn't have to remove the steering knuckles and press out the bearings just to swap the rotors anymore. That was an stupid expense hopefully relegated to the past!
While the co-efficient of drag is lowered in the nice and slippery design of this era of Accords, more thought should have been given to the abuse the hood is subject to when running down the road. I'll bet you cannot find a hood of any seventh generation Accord without a series of chips and nicks.
In summary I feel four banger Accord coupe offers low maintenance costs, sporty looks, a fun drive, good value and given a measure of reasonable care, unparalleled reliability. - Disc brakes, cheap interior as in plastics (not like the ex or sedans)
So far, this is the only review for this trim. I just bought mine during the Honda clearance and I still feel like I got ripped off. There were only 4 left in California at the time.
Moving on, this car is beautiful. Seriously, it looks freaking sweet. Its nothing compared to the EX V6MT but its something in its own class. The LX SE(Special Edition) comes with 16" alloy rims and a rear spolier that probably does nothing except for looks.
This car isn't fast. When I went to the dealer they didn't even have the 5spd manual transmission so I drove the automatic LX-SE. IT WAS SO SLOW...... no power at all. So you can tell with a 5spd manual you can rev a gear higher than it would normally switch in an automatic. I added about 400 miles on the car now, and I find this car to be very under powered. If it had 180hp and 170lb or torque, I would be grateful. Either I'm not gunning it enough in the lower gears, or I'm just babying my car and shifting too early, it feels very under powered. It rattles sometimes when you shift too early, like all stick cars, dont worry.
Ride comfort: not so great on freeways. Its a Honda, what do you expect? I've been driving a BMW 3.25i for the past year and the handling and the ride comfort is tottally different. On local, its great, feels like I'm driving a 50k car. But on freeways, oh man. Its like a bumpy roller coaster. If I had the money, I would definitely add in custom springs and shocks. Freeway rides are comparable with the Scion tC, which my girlfriend compares the LX-SE to.
Interior: I believe the Accord is the best in its class and others too. Compared to the Sentra, RSX, Camry, Corolla, Civic, and many more, the Accord interior looks the best. The amazingly brightly lit gauges make everything easy to read plus you just can't take your eyes off of it. The center console is lit orange, very suitable for a coupe. Storage compartments are plenty and under the radio console there is a large compartment for just anything (usually thats where the 6cd changer goes). The seats are very comfortable, semi bucket, I think its a little less than semi. Cons: cheap interior plastics. In the EX models they use a metal trim for the center console compartment and other parts too. It is a shame that they went shy on the LX models.
I read a review that said "29K and no hidden lights?" and the trim was a LX 5spd AT. I was very disappointed by this review that I would lower all Accord reviews. For your information, 29k would get you a V-6 6spd MT. Not a 19k LX 5spd AT. Honestly, you get what you pay for.
