- A very fast, solid performer with fabulous seats, great gas milage and now at a great price
- A-pillar placement, stereo controls,
First, this is the last of this body style. The 2008's are redesigned and look great. I was not willing to pay $6,000 more for the new design though. MSRP is 27,500 + 500 dealer delivery. Invoice is 25,770. I got mine for almost $3,000 less than Invoice and don't have to worry about teething problems with a new model.
I have some rather serious low back problems due to scoliosis and the driver's seat on this car is the best seat I have ever sat in. This is due to the excellent side bolsters which support the spine laterally. I don't find I am constantly fiddling with the lumbar support to try to alleviate low back pain. This is a sure sign of an excellent seat.
The gas mileage on my V-6 is much better than I expected. I love putting my foot into this engine as it flat flies. It is almost scary fast around town and very fast on the freeway. At about 105mph it seems to hesitate a bit. This could be the engine controls throttling back on the engine due to only 250 miles on the car. I don't know yet. If you keep you foot down it will go over 120mph - all I have tried so far. From 50-105 it is amazingly fast - right in the passing zone where you wanted the power of a V6.
The vehicle stability system works well too. I was racing a Mustang going through what is effectively a giant S turn around the Marconi bend on Biz-80 here in Sacramento and could lose the Mustang on any turn due to the Accord's superior suspension. I did get into the turn a bit hard at the apex though and either the engine cut out due to RPM max or the stability system kicked in. The engine just started running on 5 cylinders AFAICT and didn't cut out entirely - which would have resulted in a bad loss of control and roll-over accident. I shifted from D3 to D and got back into the throttle and it ran up to 115 or so, albeit at a reduced pace. The Mustang would catch me on the straights and I would lose it again on the next turn. This continued for about 7-10 miles. I did not expect this level of performance from a Japanese car.
The mirrors on this car, especially the outside mirrors, are excellent, although I had looked at an Altima coupe which has a digital compass in the mirror and had gotten confused and thought it was going to be on the Accord. I'm a bit of a nut about instrumentation, so this may not be a big deal for others, but being a pilot and loving long road trips, I would have liked the compass and automatic darkening of the rearview mirror's glass. I really like the steering-wheel stereo controls, but wish the main stereo controls had a 4x4 group of buttons for directly selecting tracks on the CD changer. I like the 6 disks too, but would have preferred MP3 capability instead. On this point, attention car companies: just give me a place to plug in a thumb drive like a SanDisk Micro Cruzer and I will be perfectly happy. I keep all of my music on my computer and don't want to burn endless disks reflecting my interest de'jour. I want to put the music de'jour on a memory stick and plug it in. Please support all compressed and uncompressed audio formats. OOG, VBR, MP3+ what-have-you. But PLEASE, give me direct access to my tracks!
This is not the best looking car in the world (have you seen the BMW 645??? OMG!!!) but it is pretty easy to look at and rear visibility with those huge mirrors is very good. Road noise is another story. Far too much road noise in this car and I think it is the tires that are to blame. I may get a set of D40M2s for the car after a year or so.
I really liked the Nissan Altima coupe, but it is a new design, there were none available in the V6 to test drive, and I am buying this car not leasing it so long-term reliability and resale is a big concern. A proven, last year model Honda still beats a newly designed Nissan Altima in my book. I have owned 2 Nissans and Infinity in the last 15 years. This is my first Honda.
