Purchased As New
Bought this car in 2003, now have 105,000. Bought the extended warranty for $800 and smartest thing I ever did. Transmission failed at 30,000 and was replaced for $2000, covered by the warranty. Transmission needed repairs again at 90,000 for $500, covered by warranty. Control unit for rear defroster failed at 80,000 for $4000, covered by warranty. Extended warranty saved me nearly $6000, a bargin in my book. Honda quality? Non existant on this model. Unfortunately, this was Honda's first year with a five speed automatic and it shows. The 2003 year was the worst of the four years this model was built. Honda Odessey's have the same problems. My Honda dealership picked me up in a 2003 Odessey and we had to be rescued on the way to the dealership. Why? The transmission failed on that minivan as well - with 90,000! This is a chronic problem, stated by others besides myself on this board.
Overall, Hondas are pretty good cars, particuarly the smaller models with four cylinder engines which have the reputation for bullet proof reliablity. Howerver the V6 models in some cases are no better than any other car and in some cases, much much worse. Buyer beware..
Note, everything else about the car is fine. The ride is great, the handling is as well. Not a great car for heavy snow, my front drive saab 9-3 is much better. Gas mileage is okay, nothing special (18/26 on average, have scored as low as a miserable Hummer style 14 mpg in the city, and as high as 30 on the highway which is quite good when I can get it). The blower fan (heat) failed 1000 miles ago when a capacitor died, and it was $100 to fix. I suspect things will break now over 100,000, but as long as the transmission holds up, I will run it into the ground. Unfortunately, the end just may be sooner than I hoped for.
