Purchased As Used
Bought my Civic EX almost 2 years ago, secondhand with 50k on the odometer. Liked how the car looked, needed a commuter that was good on the gas and would be dependable for work. Never owned a Honda car before, but had great luck with 2 Honda motorcycles over the years and thought, I hear good things about Honda so lets try it.
Drove the car about 5k miles and it started loosing coolant. Not out the tailpipe, no leaks were visible. Coolant was being pushed out the overflow. Took it into the shop and lo and behold the engine block cracked in between the cylinder and the water jacket. Motor was junk. Fortunately I bought a warranty on the car when I purchased it. Warranty paid for a used motor, another 2004 w/ 50k miles. At this point mine had 55k
Figured all was good, drove the car another 20k miles with no issues. Oil changes, full synthetic every 5k, all the preventative maitenence was done.
Then.....Tranny started making noise in Neutral. Whining a bit. Mind you it's a 5 speed. Took it to the local tranny shop and would you believe, the bearing on the input shaft was failing. At this point car had 75k on it. Again, thank the Lord for that warranty. Company wanted to put a used tranny in. I opted to pay an additional $300 and have mine rebuilt. I also paid another $250 to replace the clutch so I would not have to deal with it anytime soon. At this point I figured it's all good and I could drive this car to 200k.
Well, not exactly
96,500 miles, car starts blowing coolant again. I'm thinking maybe a head gasket, car is getting up there in miles. Took it to the shop and lo and behold....ANOTHER cracked block. What would be the odds on the same thing happening twice? Well the warranty company must hate me at this point. Warranty runs @ 97,331 800 miles from now.
So my supposedly bullet proof Honda is awaiting it's third motor. I'm 40 years old and don't beat it. How can 2 motors fail with exactly the same issue?
Needless to say I'm not pleased with the car, maybe they had took much saki the night before. Who knows. I will give it this. It doesn't nickel and dime you, when it breaks it breaks big!
As far as the car itself. AC is a bit weak when it's really hot. Drivers seat is a bit loose. Handles pretty well for a cheap car. My 14 year old loves it and wants it to be hers when she drives. I'm afraid it may not be around....read morehide
