- Good fuels economy...in warm weather
- Unreliable, uncomfortable, noisy
Purchased As New
We bought this vehicle in late 2005 expressly for the fuel economy, and in that respect, the vehicle has met it's expectations....in the warm weather. When the weather turns cold outside, the mpg drops by about 6-8. In the warm weather, I get about 36-39 mpg to/from work (country roads, but no traffic) and when on the interstate at a steady 70mph I get between 45-52 mpg. The only car I ever owned that beat that was a volkswagen golf with a diesel engine.
The car has been a bit unreliable, especially when it comes to sensors, mostly commonly, whatever watches the gas cap. Since the car was about 2 weeks old until the time of this writing, the "check gas cap" light often comes on. The dealer can't figure it out and replace the gas cap once to no avail. If the computer doesn't tell today's dealer mechanics what to do, they appear to be lost. My battery lasted about 18 months. You can't go to the dealer for warranty on Sunday's, which is fine, but since I had to purchase my own battery, it was my problem from that point forward.
On the other hand, I am still on my original brakes at 107k miles and on my 104k service, they said the brakes were only half used up...go figure, but I am pleased with that.
The ride is loud and you feel every bump, and I mean EVERY bump, but I guess that is to be expected in a little car like this. Make sure to learn how to dodge pebbles. Don't take it on a long trip! You will pay for it later!
Performance wise...well, there are motorcycles with larger engines. Don't expect to run a race with one of these. If you are looking for something with good fuel economy, then this may do the trick, just make sure you have money set aside for repairs.
Years ago I had a Honda motorcycle and it was exceptional in all manners. I guess I expected the same out of their automobiles, but I was sorely dissappointed.
My other vehicle is a 2000 Nissan Xterrra and it blows this Honda away in every respect except the fuel mileage, but at least it is consistent.
