- Fun to drive, great handling, fairly fuel efficient
- Fit and finish is lacking for a Honda
Purchased As Used
First off, I have to say, I'm a Honda fan. My wife and I have owned 6 Hondas in the last 5 years. Not because they weren't any good, but we love them and we keep buying different ones!
I bought a used 2008 Si sedan in August of 2010 and owned it until December of 2011. I loved the car despite its minor problems. I never experienced the 3rd gear issue (but it may have been fixed before I bought the car, which was a Certified Used from Honda), but the interior did have some issues. The back deck lid rattled when I cranked the stereo, the head liner sagged (just a little) at the front of the sunroof and the clutch squeaked about 60% of the time you hit.
There's the down sides. The only downsides. All of which I was willing to forgive because the car was so much fun to drive and made my 30 mile commute to work a blast! The car handles so well and is so quick when it hits VTech. When accelerating (in any gear) when the car hits VTech, you can actually feel it jump up and go. True, there is almost no power to be had when below VTech, but that is why the car gets such great gas mileage for what it is.
Anyway, I had to give up my Si in December 2011 because my job cut my pay and I could no longer afford the car and the premium fuel. For the past year and a few months I have been driving a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L, which is a great car with all the bells and whistles, but it gets worse gas mileage than the Si (which balances out since it doesn’t use premium fuel) and it is no fun to drive. Well, after getting a better position at my company, I’m in the market for another Honda and what have I decided on? Another 2008 Si. I’ve found a Figi Blue Pearl sedan and I’m signing the papers tomorrow (if all goes well). If that doesn’t work out, I will be finding another Si.
I’ve test driven a lot of cars (Honda Fit, Scion Tc, Mazda 3, Sentra SE-R Spec v and Cobalt SS to name a few) and none of them are as fun and comfortable to drive as the Si sedan. This car has everything, great power, great handling, a 6 speed gearbox, and 4 doors to boot! When I had my old one, I had no trouble hauling me and 3 friends around and with the wife and I considering have kids, the extra 2 doors will make all the difference.
Frankly, I’ve driven the competition, I’ve experienced the comfort and quality of the Accord EX-L and to me nothing I’ve been in (outside of the much more expensive Subaru WRX) has been more enjoyable. For the money, you can’t go wrong with the Si if you are looking for something fun to drive.
One thing I will warn perspective buyers about is the ride. The car is setup to handle. It is set up to eat curves at speed and keep pushing, which is what makes it a blast to drive, however, the ride is stiff. I’ve been in cars that ride a lot worse (an older Sentra SE-R Spec V that hurt my back after a 3 mile test drive!), but the stiffened suspension is not for everyone. I’m 30 years old and I love sporty little cars, and my wife loved my Si, but our parents can’t stand to ride in it. My mother-in-law drives a Civic LX and even though they are (basically) the same cars, she hated riding in my Si.
Basically, all I’m saying is don’t expect the smooth ride of something like a Civic or Accord when you climb into the Si. This car isn’t meant to be smooth, it’s meant to hold the road, even when you take an on ramp at 70+MPH with the tires squealing. But, if you’re looking for smooth, look at the Accord sedan, if you’re looking for sporty and fun to drive, you can’t find a better bang for the buck than the Si!...read morehide

- engine, handling, fuel economy
- shoddy interior, blistering paint
Purchased As New
I purchased this car last year, and so far I have not experienced any significant mechanical problems with the car. The engine, transmission, suspension and steering have all held up well under spirited driving, despite the fact that I have downshifted into 2nd instead of 4th a couple of times (good thing the car has an 8000 rpm redline).
I am disappointed, however, with the fit and finish of the car. Perhaps it was unwise to purchase a black car in Florida, but both sun visors split within the first six months. Then, the springs broke on the coat hooks, causing them to rattle around. There is no easy fix for this problem- the coat hooks are attached to a ceiling panel that also covers the side rear air bags. The dealer replaced both, but now the passenger side hook is hanging loose again. I am not happy about this, but I am going to wait until the very end of my warranty before I have any more repairs done to the sun visors or coat hooks. Honda knows about these problems, but they have not redesigned these components yet.
The most surprising flaw turned out to be the paint on the hood. One day, after washing my car, I noticed that the hood had hundreds of time cracks in the paint. The dealer had the hood repainted, but it's still distressing. I'm just fortunate that my dealer has been so good to me- it seems that not everyone has had the same great service that I have had....read morehide

- i-Vtec, good fuel economy, sporty car, chick-magnet!
- interior rattles, noisy suspension, pretty stiff ride.
I have had this car for about 11 months, This is my first brand new car, overall I really like it. It really catches alot of attention. First couple months I keep getting compliments from strangers. Ride quality is fairly stiff, but thats normal when it has sports suspension. After about 4k miles, the car began to rattle, and suspension noise was really bad, but honda took care of the issues under warranty.
Overall i think this car is really fun if your looking for a fun gas saving car. The will go if you push it, and save gas most of the time during daily drive. Pretty roomy for what it is. The stereo is awesome for what it is, its no aftermarket style system, but it does bump.
Interior is kinda cheap though, it gets scratches real easily, and they get deep, wish the plastics were a little more durable....read morehide

- Gets looks, good fuel, fun to drive
- 3rd gear defect (since fixed), defective speakers (since fixed), noisy dash/front end, shows dirt
Bought my car a year ago, I have an 07... thought the third gear never seemed right... recently heard there was a service bulletin out so I took the car to the dealer and had that repaired. Now have noises coming from the front end. Seriously was concerned about them having to drop the front end... my concerns are now coming up.
My biggest complaint is with the interior... it shows ALLL dirt.. I am constantly vaccuuming the car, the plastic scratches too easy. Leather would have been better!!!
My speakers spontaneously blew... No i wasn't blasting the stereo (which is easy - it has a great system) - told by dealer it was defective.
I love this car but am considering trading it in... It doesn't handle well at all in the snow (don't expect it to but) and if the repair to the gearbox becomes an ongoing issue then it's not worth the car payment every month.
This is my second civic and I think within the year i'm going to get an Element....read morehide

- It's a rocket sled on wheels...great fuel economy, fun to drive
- Needs an interior vacuum twice a week. Bad shift linkage.
I love this car! I had a Scion tC and thought it was fast, but this is FAST! The interior shows a lot of dirt. If you aren't careful you will grind gears in upshifting and downshifting. I amy have to take it back for service. Overall though, it's a terrific machine.

- The best car made in this price range. More then the sum of it's parts. Test drive it and know.
- RPM "hang" between shifts is very unpresent.
This RPM hang problem needs to be fixed, dealer will not acknolwlage there is a problem.

- Fuel Economy, Exterior/Interior Styling, Handling, Driver-Oriented Experience, Cup Holders
- Interior plastic "scuffs" very easily, Interior squeaks, throttle lag, large blind spots throughout
I've had this car for a good six months and can finally give a decent review of my experience. The first three months were trouble free during the cold weather as I bought the car in Winter. No rain leaks anywhere and the car performed well in the rain. There were some fit and finish issues exterior and interior wise, (ie. panels and linings do not match, either by overlapping, popping out, have gaping holes or misalignment). Noticeable difference between a 1992 Civic vs. a 2008 Civic in terms of quality and fit and finish.
Fast forward another 3 months and it's now Summer. Interior incessantly squeaks as the temperature rises. During the 3 digit record-breaking temp, my sun visors literally split in half and no longer worked, creating a visibility problem. A/C condensation leaks on the inside of the car, so be sure to check for that as water damage to the interior can damage electrical parts as well as a health issue (mold/mildew smell). The black interior will eventually start to fade in certain areas as patches. Paint chips will eventually show itself due to the very thin paint. Transmission used to be ultra silky smooth is now quite notchy with occasional gear wall regardless of which gear.
Blind spots are exceptionally large enough where pedestrians can get lost in them. Interior is heavily scratch/scuff prone especially around the lower door panels (high traffic area). The slightest touch with your shoes will scuff it. Guarantee. And that's it for now....read morehide

- Uncomfortable, slow, no acceleration, not fun to drive, terrible suspension and steering.
If you want a fun sporty car to drive, look else where.
It has no kick, feels like a truck trying to accelerate from stop. It feels heavy and underpowered.
The suspension, steering, and control make the car feel like an old Town Car or Cadillac. There is no connection to the road and it feels much to soft and bouncy.
It's hard to believe for the lacking performance that this car provides it still requires premium fuel. It's mind boggling.
Overall, I'm very disappointed with the Si. I was looking for a fun to drive pocket rocket and the Si does not fill that role. One might as well buy the normal Civic which gets substantially better gas mileage and does not require premium, you will hardly notice a difference in performance....read morehide

- Great value, good mpg, handling is very good, interior excellent and build quality very good.
- Cars can always have more horsepower imo. However, this is a commute car for me so no concern.
I'm very impressed with this car. Not a single problem so far. Dealership treated me well as did all of the Honda Dealerships that I visited during my quoting process. I picked my '08 Si for under $20K and in every area except horsepower it exceeded the 350Z I owned.
I love the LSD, Digital Dash, Seats, Extra Seating, Room and better mileage. It rides very well. However, I did upgrade the tires to BFG G-force Super Sport A/S which helped the ride and quieted it down a tad without losing any of the cars super handling capabilities.
The sunroof is a nice plus for this model. The stereo is much better than my 350Z was. It looks and required less from me than my 350Z did to make it a fun / nice car to drive on a daily basis.
Love the trunk space and the 60/40 split seats for when 3 of us go golfing.
Shifter is short and silky.
Lots of fun features for a car under $20K. The 350Z is a better car ... but, for $11K more with less comfort features included I'm glad I picked the Honda this time around.
Still miss the Z but, if better mpg is your goal. Nice option to think about....read morehide

- Engines vtec, standard features, handling/LSD, gas mileage considering high compression engine.
- Small inside, interior cloth attracts everything, 6 speed a little rough, no gas mileage indicator.
Did a lot of research/test driving before buying my 2008 Civic Si coupe. I test drove the GTI, Cobalt SS turbocharged. Both the GTI and Cobalt SS turbocharged seemed quicker. The Cobalt SS turbocharged is most certainly quicker. Still both the GTI and the Cobalt SS turbocharged are 3-5K more in price. Both also cost more to own/maintain.
Researching problems found that the Civic Si had its fair share. Specifically the Civic Si has a third gear issue. I did find the TSB for this and made sure the Civic Si I bought VIN number was not included in the suspected list. Granted this does not promise anything, but it better then doing nothing. None the less, if the problem comes up, I have a offical TSB from honda explaining/forcing them to fix it.
So far, I love the car. For 19,500 it is worth every cent. It is not the fastest thing out there, but is is certainly quick when it needs to be. It will not beat no high liter V6 or any V8, but keeps up with any 4 cyclinder. I would state its performance similar to that of my 2005 Cobalt SS Subercharged. The only difference would be the the Cobalt SS Subercharged made its power early while the Civic Si makes its power late. If the two raced, the Cobalt SS Supercharged would pull off the line first, but the Civic Si would catch up and at the post 60mph mark and blow by. The Civic Si handles great. The LSD makes a lot of difference. Even with low grade tires, the car still holds the corners better then any of the competition I had driven.
The interior dash information layout takes a while to get use to. Still, I like it. The seats could be a little wider for my large back.
Overall, on a one to ten scale, I give the car a high 8....read morehide
