2008 Honda Civic Si Sedan User Reviews
6-Spd MT w/ Nav and Performance Tires shown
- $12,306 - $12,871
- Speedy at higher rev, trunk space, race pedals, suspension
- weak a/c, LOTS of fit & finish issues, suspension problem
I like this car a lot despite all the problems I've had with it. Acceleration and shifter action are nice, although low end torque is non-existent. You really have to stomp on the accelerator to get performance. Interior quality and dashboard look great to me, and the car's external lines are sporty without looking too ricey a la WRX or Evo. One of the windows came chipped, rubber door linings weren't installed properly, one window was scratched on the inside with a 3" gash. Also, the trunk doesn't quite close solidly. I have to exert more effort to close it than I should. I also hear a clicking noise in my left front shock whenever I hit a bump and have the steering wheel turned slightly. Made in Canada Made in Japan. All this is annoying, but the engine is quite something. I'm averaging 23mpg in mostly city driving, which is a worse than I thought I'd get. Final thing that is really annoying is that the a/c is weak when it's hotter than 92 degrees outside. Very weak compared to other cars in similar conditions. I have to have the a/c on max at the coldest setting sometimes, and it STILL isn't that cold. Weird....read morehide

- Great engine, good fuel economy, comfortable seating, good sound system
- A/C takes time to get cold, but could just be my car. Leather is not an option.
At 37 years old, and a dad, you would think the car is too small. Not the case. My wife, baby and I went on a 3 hour trip to the keys last week from Orlando. Avg MPG 28. The trunk is large. We were able to get a stroller, 3 suitcases, an exersaucer (a 2-foot by 3 foot kids toy.) and a "bouncy chair" in the trunk. The baby seat is easily accessible, and the cars LATCH system is a breeze to connect. (Unlike my wife's ridiculous crossover with a rear seat that you have to be enrolled in yoga classes to stretch like a contortionist to get into.) Please realize that this car is bigger than the original Honda Accord sedans of the 70's. The car is quick too. It is not for someone who wants basic transportation. This four door car is for the dad (and mom) who refuses to let go of their wild side. It handles like a go-cart, and the 8000 RPM rev limiter engine is insane sounding, and addictive. Trust me on this. I find my wife "borrowing" this car a lot. Sound system is good, and gets louder as the engine get louder. A necessity at 6500-7800RPMs. My car is FIGI blue, and has the character of the old 80's supercars, with the raked hood and wedge design. Not a vette, or a stang, but good enough for this dad....read morehide

- fuel economy vs power = amazing; lots of room for turbo
- gearing may be a little too close
I bought this car because I wanted to have a reliable vehicle with power. You have to understand that I come from a background of muscle cars so for me to buy a honda was against my religion. Unfortunately, after graduating college my commute was near 50 miles one way so I couldn't go out and buy an ss camaro or ws6 trans.
I chose the si after driving it and feeling why everyone raved about vtec. Let me explain..it doesn't have the torque nor did I expect it to come close to what I am used to because there is no replacement for displacement. BUT..I was absolutely amazed at how quick the car accelerated, especially when the engine was kept over 5 grand.
If you really want the car to come alive, a cold air intake along with headers and an exhaust did wonders. Unfortunately I will not take the forced induction route to save myself the aggravation of reliability with my commutes, but I have a new respect for hp per cube. ftw vtec....read morehide

- Good Gas mileage/comfortable interior/fast/smooth handling/lots of power
- metal on the inside burns when the car has sat in sun/ low to the ground and scrapes curve sometimes
I have the Mugen edition and I LOVE this car! It is great. The only things are like I said above. The gear shif and under the stearing wheel are metal so after you get in the car on a hot day and you try to shif you have to have something between your hand and the metal because it will burn your hand otherwise. Also the seats are dark which leads to a hot car on a hot day.
The AC is great as is the stero system. The car handles like a dream. The gas milage is great. The truck space is awesome.
The car is low to the ground. My model has ground effects that came on it so I have to be very careful on hills or else I will scrape the bottom of the ground effect.
This car has lots of nice features to help you. For instance, it won't let you lock yourself out and it won't let you leave your headlights on. It plays music until your turn the lights off. It has a buzzer which will go off until everyone is buckled up.
I would say get this car. The only 2 downfalls are that it is low to the ground and the metal gear shifter and those are worth the trouble....read morehide

- Excellent performance. Loves to be run hard at high RPMs. Very nice interior and cockpit.
- Shifting between 1,2 & 3rd gear is too close. No bluetooth.
I have had my Si for a little more than a month. I am very impressed with the Si's performance and handling. It definately feels like you are driving a race car. Performance is substantially better at high rpms - anything above 4000. That is great for the low end, but in sixth gear the rpms are still high (3500+ at 60 mph).
The cockpit is very snug, but comfortable. I am 6 ft and I am comfortable. It might be tight for someone larger. The controls are very well laid out. However, it is missing bluetooth integration for handfree telephone (which is available on the Accord) and true iPod integration. It does have the mp3 aux input, but is a little clumsy pluging in and out to switch between inputs. It does have the card slot, but I have yet to get that to work.
The navigation is very nice and the XM works well. However, I had a Pioneer AVIC Z1 navigation/XM in my last vehicle which had so many more features that I really miss (built in disk drive for music, song memory, information downloads -stock, sports scores, etc). The factory unit however, is functional and very easy to use.
Overall, the car gets an A+. If you are buying this car, it is because you like to drive and have fun getting from point A to point B. You are probably not buying it for creature comforts and luxury items. The Civic Si is truely a fun car to drive....read morehide

- Surprisingly good sound system, interior, engine, gas mileage, and its overall goodness
- Get too tempted to go well over the speed limit.
This is one amazing car. If you are considering buying this car versus' another car, I wouldn't hesitate about getting the Si. When you first get in, it feels like you're in a cockpit of a jet. It's fast and it will turn heads. The seats are very comfortable but I can see how some people who are taller and just have a bigger build may not. This is just one fun car to drive and you will not be disappointed by its handling or speed....read morehide

- Great Looks, Great Sounds - Exhaust and OEM Stereo, Interior Configuration, Fun Factor!
- Transmission Ratio/Gear Spacing, Road Noise with Rear Seats Down
What a great car... this is our second Si and will definitely lead to a third next time! My wife (5'2") and I (5'11") are more than satisfied with every aspect of the car's performance, handling, fit and finish, and comparable value. We have also been really pleased with some of the interior refinements (door panel ledges, moving center arm rest, telescoptic wheel, and wheel mounted controls) over the last iteration. With six months in, we have had no problems or concerns...
A couple of things to consider, especially in Northern climates, are the limitations imposed on Snow Tire selection (i.e. 17 inch steel rims aren't common in the Civic hub configuration so you'll likely have to select from 16's) and there is more droaning noise than expected with the rear seats down (an issue for skiers and boarders).
A separate issue (also noted by others above) stems from the (questionable) choice of gear ratios - too tightly grouped - in the transition between first-second-third for this engine configuration. First is almost unnecessary for take-off (worse in winter conditions where slippage is common), and if you wind-out in first you can almost make the jump to third, although it's a bit weak. Spacing-out the gear ratios a little bit more would improve the launch/low end driving characteristics, and would also improve highway mileage and power characteristics. Currently at 120 km/h (about 70-75 mph I think) in sixth I am turning close to 4K rpm, this is tough to swallow considering that it's about the same as my last Si in fifth - and I'm burning "premium" to do it... I was hoping that sixth would get me down around 2500/3000 rpm at that speed, and future versions should take this into account....read morehide

- Handling, shifter, musical engine, driver's seat, equipment level, roominess
- Rear bumper is vulnerable while parallel parked
This car does more things right than just about anything else on the market. I get good mileage on the highway, but it needs premium fuel and does better on non-CA gas. When you're in the mood, this is an extremely fun car to drive.

- Great looks, plush interior, makes me smile when I'm driving it:)
- Bucket seats a little difficult to get used to, made for smaller people (I'm 6'2" 235lbs)
I was in a terrible situation with my piece of junk Audi A4. I had convinced myself that it was going to fall apart any minute, and I feared driving it every time I got in the car. I was worrying about it constantly, plus I was totally upside down on it financially. I wanted to get a new car and knew that I was going to have to roll over some of my negative equity when I traded it in. In the end, I paid $20,600 before taxes, got a 4.7% APR for 72 months, gap insurance for $650, and an extended 7year/80,000 mile warranty just to be on the safe side. I think I got a killer deal, but I lost a pretty significant amount of cash. However, when I got in this car and drove it off the lot, I completely forgot about the past. This car is amazing.
The interior is like a cockpit. The guages are simple and easy to use. I like the way the spedometer and tach are set up, but some might not. The exterior body is really good looking and I've noticed a lot of people looking my way. But, the best part has to be the performance. The engine is music to your ears, especially between 6-8,000 RPM's. It sounds and drives like a serious race car. When you consider the price, this car is a no-brainer. If you can swing it, buy it! It will put the joy back into driving....read morehide
