Purchased As New
I recently sold my 2008 Element because of making the conscious decision to downsize my lifestyle by eliminating unneccessary costs--not because of anything having to do with the vehicle itself.
Bought this new in Oct. 2007 as a 2008 model after being rear-ended by a semi-truck driver--accident totalled out my 1998 Civic CX hatchback (walked away unscathed!)--and chose this over a new Accord because of its utilitarian nature: no carpets, storage capacity galore, removeable seats, etc.
Fun to drive--I personally found this to be an exceptionally comfortable car to drive, but my husband had the opposite opinion and always referred to the E as "a chick car" and hated driving it. If you're not a lead foot, I regularly pulled an amazing 27-30mpg out of my beast maintaining a steady 55-60mph during highway driving. City mpg sucks--typically around 20mpg. Also liked this because it sits fairly high off the road, and you're not "bullied" by other drivers like you would be in a small car.
My #1 complaint on the Element (and if you read owner forums, this is a common complaint) is the rear brakes, which were--without fail--continually noisy for the four years I owned this SUV. Parked it at the airport for a week in a covered garage, and returned to find that my brakes seemed to be "frozen" into place and made a thunking noise for the first 5 minutes I drove it, at which time the problem seemed to "right" itself.
When I was showing this vehicle to potential buyers, everyone seemed surprised by the noise in the cabin. Again, do your research on the Element forums. The noise never bothered me. Put on some tunes and enjoy the ride. I can't stress enough that any potential buyers NEED TO READ THE ELEMENT FORUMS.
Overall, this is a great vehicle, and I would highly recommend the Element to anyone looking for a small SUV that gets decent gas mileage over all.
Rear brakes continually moaned and creaked during winter months. Problem seemed to rectify itself during warmer months, but occasionally the E's brakes would still throw me a curve ball and moan for no apparent reason.
