I drive a lot, and this car is perfect for commuting. Forget it as a family car - it only has two seats.
Replaced battery at 193,000 miles at a cost of $2,000 (Honda was nice to me). Overall mileage is 55.2 on Texas roads, usually with AC running.
Car is quick despite small engine and can cruise at 70, but does best at 60-65....read morehide

- Noisey in cabin, but car is kept light with less insulation
My average daily commute is 84.5 miles round trip, all California freeway. My average fill-up is 6.1 gallons, for the week. At current gas prices, that's $19.21 per week. The Honda Insight is a very amazing car, and an incredible value for the commuter. Yes, the car is noisey, but the car is kept light with little insulation and very few options; that adds weight which uses fuel. It is fun to drive because of its agile handling and the 1.0 Ltr engine with the electric boost give it quite a bit of pep. My gas mileage is the envy of anyone I talk with. The Insight is the answer to efficient electric hybrid design and execution. It is incredible that the Honday Insight is no longer manufactured....read morehide

- Over 700 miles on a tank of gas, great sound system, handy hatchback
- Not for transporting 2 large adults, over 6 feet or 200 lbs or 2 small adults with a Great Dane.
I purchased a 2000 Insight in 2003 from a fellow who worked for a solar energy company, who was on the cutting edge of "green" technology. He sold the car to me with 32,000 miles already `registered on the odometer for $14,500 It was red and meticulously taken care of.
The sticker price was a around $21,000. Unfortunately I rear ended a car in commuter traffic last June. My insurance Company, (before this accident!), charged me less than $700.00 yr as a "good driver" The car was totaled. I received $10,500.00 for the car from my insurance
company in June 2006. Not bad depreciation, eh? I did not notice problems with brakes, extra noise while drriving, and although totaled, thanks to Honda's engineering, I walked away from this accident w/o a scratch. Plenty of power -yes- uphill, too...the car was discontinued in 2006. It's too good. Try finding one. If you can...and buy it. If your ego needs a fancy, sexy, or power statement...you wouldn't be reading this. It's THE HYBRID par excellence. No special treatment like plugging in or special gas. I would wish it would look as good as it deserves to look. actually i was looking for green cars in hybrid cars list, but this is the greenest one :).

My wife and I bought serial number 892 off the assembly line in Japan in May of 2000. It was one of the very first hybrids in South Florida. The first version of the Prius wasn't even on sale yet (and it was really ugly.
We now have over 100,000 miles on it, and we have averaged more than 46 mpg over this time. People still gawk at the looks of the thing, particularly the fender skirts, and we still get asked if we really do get 70MPG (our licenseplate). Well, on the highway, with no air conditioning, and the windows up, we can definitely get 70 mpg, but we certainly don't AVERAGE 70 mpg. We are most happy with the 46mpg we actually average.
You really don't want to be around us when the gas prices get to around $3.00 per gallon. We get unpleasantly smug!
I got rear-ended while at a dead stop on an off ramp from the interstate. The hit and run driver was doing over 40 mph, and, as I had taken my foot off the brake when I saw him coming, and managed to steer back towards the interstate, my little Insight was thrown close to a quarter mile before I came to a stop. I got taken off on a backboard, but only had a torn rotator cuff to show for the collision. It took 5 months for the local Honda body shop to fix the car, primarily because they had to close down the shop to weld aluminum, and the body shop manager was not willing to close it during the work day. So my car sat. As a side benefit, however, Honda replaced the battery pack under warranty so I still don't know how much it will cost to replace.
We love the car. It is a great little commuter. We got a tax credit when we bought it, and, for $5.00 a year, I can drive in the HOV lane as a single driver all day long. Oh, and I have it on reasonable authority that the car will do over 100 mph wthout any difficulty whatsoever....read morehide

The weight limit caught me by surprise, and was not disclosed by the dealer. I am otherwise happy with the ride, acceleration, comfort, etc. of the car, but the weight limit is ridiculous. The moral of this story is buyer beware! Read the fine print! I recommend purchasing the manual transmission. It has better mileage!
Neither the BBB or Honda America were at all helpful regarding the weight limit. It's a useful commuter car, though....read morehide

This car is truly the winner without question for fuel mileage and power! Not too many people realize how fast this little car is. And it can stop like no other car including a Citroen. A Prius should not be compared to this car. A Prius is a snail compared to this car. And those who have Priuses get nowhere near the fuel mileage this car gets, unless they drive like little old ladies. Bill T....read morehide

- My 2000 model has over 80k miles on it and has averaged over 56 mpg in WI driving. Comfortable.
- Some people complain about loud road noise, I installed good audio speakers.
Bought used over three years ago, last fall I was offered as much as I paid for it as a trade in by the same dealership. Cars generally are 'sinkholes' and not an investment, the Insight has held it's value well. Won't rust since the metal that is used is primarily aluminum. Is a truly fun car to drive on switch-back roads due to its low profile handling, "sports-car-ish". At one point I was medically restricted to a five mile driving range and never got below 40mpg even in the coldest times of our winters - that is actual mileage, not wishful thinking EPA. Few cars ever achieve even that, yet the consistent 50+mpg is now taken for granted. I like the fact that I'll go well over 500 miles on a 10.5 gallon tank, and it shocked me when I had to paid $30 for a tank of gas when the price went way up... then I looked at the other vehicles at the gas station and wondered how those peoples budgets handle filling up their full size pick-ups and SUVs. I have also found the Insight to be remarkably versitile since it is a hatchback - you can really utilize that rear space for cargo and I have camped out of it on numerous occassions while on extended road trips. I wish my wife would get more confortable driving a stick shift so that we could use this car more frequently instead of one of our others for when we go on road trips, but if that is one of her few faults I can live with her and the car real easy. I would be surprised if I do not get at least 200,000 miles on this baby before I decide to get rid of it and get something with better milage, which I hope is available by then seeing as the highest rated mileage stock car in the USA is being pulled from the market due to soft sales. Personally, I think this has more to say about 'soft Americans' than the car itself, since the car is not uncomfortable, simply not "plush". Easily hits interstate entrance speeds in second gear, and has no trouble keeping up with traffic or exceeding the speed limit. Always wondered why Honda didn't make a cruise control standard on a commuter car like this though. Oh well, like the improved audio speakers to counter the road noise, an after-market cruise control has taken care of that problem with ease. Sorry to see these leave the market. When I bought my Insight, I knew that the interior space would be less than I was used to but it's no big deal. I know how a short, 2 seater rides, so that was no surprise and it's quite acceptable. What I was surprised about was the road noise. Way too much for a Honda product. I still give it 5 stars....read morehide
