- Nice handling and acceleration
- Unreliable, vibration-resonance at 2000RPM leading to failure of other parts
I bought a new Odyssey EX-L about 2 years ago. Since then it has been nothing else, but a problem. The vibration-resonance dramatically increased around 20000 miles. I took the van to the dealership and the power steering pump was replaced, but that did not resolve resonance. Later we had to take it again and the A-pipe was replaced, which minimally reduced droning sound, but has not solved the problem the dealership has changed and inspected most of the components and attributed that vibration to a construction-engineering problem, which has to be investigated by the manufacturer (the dealership was extremely friendly and nice, but they had no help from the Honda technical help line).
I then tried to call Honda customer service in regards of the problem, but they are deaf and blind, they repeatedly state that it is not a problem, but when I requested a written statement that the vibration and resonance are normal to this model and would not interfere with performance of the car - they simply hung-up the phone. The person, dealing with that is Julie Kim who can be reached at 1800-999-1009 ext 118056. She is just a master of ditching the customers, no wonder some people were forced to go to the lawyers and file several class action law suits (Odyssey transmission failures in some models, over clocked odometers showing 5% less mileage).
Upon reviewing my concerns and multiple online complains of multiple owners I came to this conclusion:
Droning sounds on 2005 EX-L IS A STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DEFECT due to resonance. It occurs at 1500-1600 and 2000-2100 RPM especially when more torque is needed (acceleration, uphill climbing). It will not go away until Honda will change the engine mounts maybe reengineer the engine and transmission or other unknown to me (probably to them too) parts. Changing the A pipe reduces the sound, but A-pipe failure is due to the resonance and will happen again and again. Resonance is well known to damage and destroy things. Honda probably doesnt care about it, since damage occurs way beyond warranty to other parts (already had power steering pump replaced as well as brakes) probably transmission and other parts.
People, if you are in search of a new minivan DO NOT BUY HONDA ODYSSEY EX-L (leather with cylinder management) or Touring unless Honda acknowledges the problem and fixes it. Meanwhile Honda should give an extended warranty on these cars for free as a courtesy and acknowledgment of destructive resonance -humming, vibration.
