2009 Honda Pilot

- Decent value, seats 8.
- Poor fuel economy, rough ride, quality/reliability issues
Purchased As New
Guess you get what you pay for. Wanted something that seats 7 or 8 with all the tech goodies for not too much money, and I for one prefer a boxy design over the swoopy CUV thing. So I thought the Pilot would fit the bill, but regret my purchase from day 1. Okay, maybe the first year was fine but after that, strong steering vibration when braking at highway speeds. Replaced bushings (high price item, brake job, still no better). Tons of rattles from all the cheap plastic pieces, whole dash rattles. They fix one rattle, another one pops up a few months later. Suspension is floaty yet harsh over small bumps, not exactly a comfortable cush ride. AWD is not very good on snow. Overall, the car just feels "cheap", not what the quality I thought a Honda would be. Only 4 years old and the paint is already not shiny (I do wash and wax regularly), black parts dull and filmy. Leather already looked old after a about a year, creased and wrinkled. And good think I have AAA, battery needs a boost at least 3-4 times per year. Overall no major mechanical issues, but the rattles, the bad brakes and uncomfortable ride/suspension do not exactly scream quality....read morehide

- Roomy, Great Ride, Decent gas mileage
- None so far
Purchased As New
I just traded in my Acura TL for the fully loaded pilot. This car is awesome. It has everything you could want and is priced substanially less than my wife's - not so loaded MDX. Car has a great ride and comfortable seats 8. I took 6 adults and 2 kids in car seats for a long trip with no complaints. The kids love the DVD and I love the NAV and all the other goodies. Overall this is a great vehicle....read morehide

- Price, standard options, useability, functionality...
- NAV's "uni-controller", only one DVD screen, no heated rear seating, and could use more tow-powe
Purchased As New
Wow, this is my 15th or 16th car I've bought. I love to drive and I love functionality. Most cars I can figure out all the "ins-and-outs" prior to leaving the lot. My new Pilot, holy-cow, I'm still learning all the nice surprises almost every day! I've compared two other vehicles with this; the 2009 MDX and 2010 RX350. While the MDX and RX are superior in luxury and comfort, daily functionality, std options, and useability in the end won me over. The MDX w/o the RES but with the Tech pkg was $40,200! My Pilot w/NAV & RES 4WD Touring was $36,000! I've had other Honda Nav sys and they were so so. This new NAV's voice control is better. The "uni-controller" is AWEFULL! I've had previous Honda's touch screen and they were better! (BTW, be carefiul NOT to insert new NAV DVD into older NAV systems... if u do "Google" for a fix to revert back to the old NAVI DVD.) My intention for towing is another car so the 4500lb max cuts very close. The MDX has 500lb extra tow capacity, though you have to pay an additional $1200 for it installed. Gas is good. If you compare this to a mini-van, a TOL Subaru, or another small SUV/Crossover, it is on par. I have 200 miles on it now and average 15mpg (mostly city with A/C on). In my experience, all new cars get less than the published rate, but gradually gets better as the care hits around 10k and hits max gas performance around 30k. ROOMY! Most leg/head room of any on par third row seating! 2nd row also adjusts but does not recline. Bluetooth awesome! DVD system is awesome. Comes with three headphone jacks (each with separate volume cntrl) and two WIRELESS headsets! iPod Touch plugs right in (though no video supported from Touch). Even supports plain USB memory sticks with MP3/WMAs! Power seats for passenger! (don't know if it supports bluetooth wireless music...) All rear seats fold flat in 60/40 config. Oh, rear storage is great, has a lift-and-stow with a built in net for 30lb storage! Has two small compartment glove-box" like storage in rear too. Backup and forward parking sensors are AWESOME! They really work! The display also shows where the obstcles are. One bad thing about the sensor in the front, and that is it does not sense directly in front, only the front corners. Has built in digital compass, tire pressure sensor, and live fuel economy between the gages! On other models, you have to choose the NAV map or the live fuel econ! Wow, I'm rambling. In short, this is great SUV, limited in towing capacity. The controls (so many buttons...) are a bit complex. Two things of the NAV I do not like in comparision to other Hondas. The "uni-controller" vice touch screen, and the the way you put current location into an address book. Touch screen allows you to just touch the location then enter the location name. The new NAV, well it takes 3-5 minutes to do. Lastly, some Honda dealers will jack up the price on the 4WD Touring model. 6/7 dealers around me did exactly that. One dealer asked for sticker price! If you run into this problem, go with the MDX. You will not be disapointed unless you really need the 8th seat! lol....read morehide

- pretty good fuel economy, standard features, room, driving dynamics
- somewhat complicated systems to get used to i.e. bluetooth, nav, voice climate controls
had an 07 pilot, which was a good vehicle and served us well. We could not believe how much improved this 09 version is. Ride is not even comparable to the 07 and so far we are averaging about 21mpg. Great time to buy with incentive financing and dealers are willing to work with you. I even talked them into a 8 yr/ 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on top of a great out the door price. Lastly, if you are undecided about the touring model, go for it. It is AWESOME!!! I don't think you could ask for more features....read morehide

- Weak brakes: load it up with 7 people and try it in stop/go traffic on freeways.
The square box shape is a repackaged old Isuzu Trooper. All the gadgetry have nothing to do with driving. Steering and braking are about the same as a 10 year-old Corolla.

- like the fuel economy for the size, great seating arrangement with 3 full rows and plenty of storage
- voice activated features don't work great for me

- VCM Technology, Cargo space, comfort, updated styling
- Nothing yet
Couldn't be happier with my recent Pilot touring model purchase. Honda did an amazing job redesigning the Pilot. I think Honda knows it too. The dealership that I purchased my Pilot from recently received over 100 '09 Pilots to sell. The VCM tech makes this vehicle one of thes most fuel efficient 4,500+ pound non-hybrids on the market. The eight passenger seating and cargo space is a plus. very easy to fold the seats down into a flat storage area. the touring model has everyting that I would expect and then some. Expected the NAV, backup camera, and handsfree link, but didn't expect to see things like an outlet for plugs, heated side mirrors, storage bins galore, middle seat belts from celing, top tier stereo system, automatic shut-off headphones, mp3 hookup, etc. The 2009 Pilot is going to become the Mazda CX9 of last year....read morehide
