Like any Honda, it does everything adequately, not exceptionally. It's a boring vehicle, it rides OK, it has middle of the road styling, decent handling and noise levels. Even the color choices are mundane; none of them make you take notice. If you're not looking for fun but for utilitarian performance, this suv will work for you. Big, roomy and comfortable, nice seats, lots of storage, seats fold nice and flat for big, open cargo area. Nice interior trim, fit and finish. There is a lot of wind and road noise for a vehicle in this price range, and the throttle is very sensitive, making smooth starts a little difficult: manufactures do this to give the illusion of more power. The ride is nice, steers and maneuvers well. The drivetrain felt a little sloppy. Has a back-up camera, but the view out the rear good.

I test drove at Nelson Honda in El Monte, CA - I don't recommend this Honda dealership: They did not give me one straight answer to any of my questions, they used the tried-and-true "must buy now" and ALL of the other car dealer schemes, high-pressure, and the salesman, Michal Tapia, outright lied to me about some paperwork / legal issues....read morehide

Interior noise, poor city gas milage, weird nav system

There are things that I really like and really dislike. City milage is poor. But keeping the tire pressure @ 45psi really helps. Interior sound is very unacceptable. Navigation system is almost unusable because of the complexity. (I turn it off and use my old GARMIN NUVI - easier to use!) Do not think that the interior fit and trim is as bad as others have reviewed. The dash surface is great for non-reflectance. Great as a people hauler; we have had four adults and three children in car seats plus luggage and the PILOT performed well. I feel that the steering is too fast for a vehicle of this size. Backing-up is a challenge and the rear view camera is not a great help.A recent trip of 300 miles round trip yielded about 25mpg (Good considering 70 mph interstate and some mountains - Not sure why others are not getting better mpg!) Voice commands are never 100% accurate. Thought that HONDA would embrace more current lighting technologies. Bought in May and currently (09-09-11) has just under 5000 miles. Owned the Pilot for about 1k miles and have the following observations:

When I got home, some things bugged me:

-Moonroof didn't work. This is a known issue that they need to recalibrate so they did.

-Rearview mirror was loose and wobbly.

-Rear window hinge panel was not flush w/ the rest of the vehicle. It's also a known issue per reading the forums.

-Fuel economy is very poor, only way to reach 23mpgs is if you're going downhill and/or driving thru Kansas. Ok i'm kinda joking but it is nowhere near. I drive roughly 90% on the highway and get approx 20.5mpg and i'm really easy on the throttle. I will say it's hot outside so the A/C was on the whole time. Once the engine settles, I hope it reaches 23mpgs.

-Engine is barely adequate to push this 4300lb Pilot. My wife's 2010 CR-V merges on the freeway considerably faster.

-Great ride quality. I'd say it's quiet enough to hold a conversation w/ the folks in the 3rd row.

-Lots of cargo for a family of 5. It's great being able to haul a lot of people. Back seat is comfy but if you're 5'10" or taller, it may get annoying for long drives.

-Weak car audio. Ye's it's 7 speakers w/ a Sub, but it sounds very very weak for a vehicle that one pays $35k for.

Overall: it does the job but doesn't do it well. I'd expect more from a Honda. The CR-V's build quality runs circles around this. The 2012 EXL is better if you can get past the exterior 'refresh'....read morehide

my wife and I bought our 2011 Pilot brand new! We drove it for 20k miles until she hit a cow on the interstate with it head on at 60 mph! The pilot was totaled but my wife survived with only a little scratch on her arm from the airbag! We will be buying another one soon! They have rated the pilot best in the crash rating, and now we have the unwanted proof!...read morehide

I am actually an avid Toyota customer. I had the highlander and got great gas mileage. Bought my first Honda and my only complaint is the gas mileage. Terrible!
