Hyundai got so much right with this car. Its head-turning, attractively distinctive appearence is probably one of the best since the Kia Soul had people asking "What is that?". The interior appointments are many and well thought-out. Almost everything you want to do is right on the steering wheel. There are all kinds of goodies for the tecno-phile, a navigation system, bluetooth, push button startup and an On-star-like hookup to your I-device that enables remote startup. Add to that clutchless manual transmission and novel "paddle shifters", a Turbo engine, and you have one fun driving machine. Right?
WRONG. The engineers at Hyundai apparently got so caught up in all these little goodies that they forgot the basics: performance and comfort. Riding in the Veloster is like being on a cobblestone street 85-90% of the time. Only on the most pristine highway straightaway do you get anything like a comfy ride ("sports-tuned suspension"). The gas milage on for the Turbo is a bleak 21 MPG with mostly highway driving. And performance? Sorry, non-existent. The last straw for me with this car was the day an older fellow in a Genesis pulled along side me on the highway and gave the proverbial nod. I thought I'd open up the Veloster--just this once!--and see what it could do. As it approached eighty, the entire car began to shake. As I crept over that mark, the wheel began to vibrate so hard in my hands that I had trouble steering. I thought the car might break apart, so I backed off, and the Genesis left me in the dust.
Moral of the story: if you want a look-worthy vehicle and like the feel of an old wood roller coaster, then the Veloster is the car for you. If not, drool a little, sigh a little, and keep looking.
