Purchased As New
It took me about a year to settle on what new car I wanted after doing 12 months of vigorous research and considered literally every car in my price range. After 11 of those months I narrowed it down to a few: Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra, and Kia Soul. Now I know the Soul is a completely different car than the other two, but I was coming from a 2006 Mazda 6 (which I liked a lot) and wasn't sure if I wanted a boxy car that sits higher up or not. Well, one day I decided to test drive all three cars in a day. Lo and behold I instantly fell in love with the Soul as soon as my foot hit the gas pedal. I bought one the following weekend.
I've now owned my Soul about 6 months, with just under 5000 miles. This is my fourth car, and first I am buying brand new with my own money. One thing I was surprised at was how inexpensive it is. It's actually one of the cheapest cars on the road. You wouldn't think that judging by the interior. Most of the inside is made with hard plastics but it never feels cheap. It's not technically an SUV (it's an urban crossover) but when you're inside it feels like an SUV. I'm 6'1" so I needed a car with a lot of head room and the Soul definitely delivers. The visibility is fantastic and my only complaints in that department are the rear corners of the car have blind spots, so be careful when backing up. Otherwise visibility is great. While it doesn't handle or ride like a sports car it is anything but slow. When people look at a boxy car like the Soul they don't imagine it having good acceleration but I must say it's a lot better than you'd expect! The car's handling is great, the seats are very comfortable, and the overall ride is just a pleasure. In fact, driving this car has made me love driving. I just absolutely love this car. And you know what? If I can get a good 6 to 8 years out of it, I will be buying the next generation Kia Soul. That's how much I love it. My *only* complaint is so-so gas mileage. It's advertised at 26 city, 32 highway mileage, which seems way off to me. I normally get about 19 mpg but my commute to work is in constant stop and go traffic, but the rare times I drive complete highway miles it averages about 27 mpg. So the gas mileage is "meh" at best but you know what? I don't even care because I've never been so happy to own a car.
