My Freelander 2003 has had many electrical problems which appeared without warning; nothing catastrophic, but when the sunroof does not close and the sky is threatening, it does seem huge. I have never gone offroad; I would never trust the car to perform. When you drive over a bump in the road, the radio station changes (not kidding!). I have never had a car with so many "quirks" and unexplained problems. Dealer servicing is mandated for oil changes and very expensive. My dealer service center is rude beyond belief and at least a month is needed to get a loaner car. The nearby car rental relies heavily on frustrated Land Rover customers suddenly needing a car. I would never again get a Land Rover of any variety....read morehide

- rarely see other Freelanders on the road, great features
- too rare (translates to parts are expensive), sucks gas, 13 visits for service in 1 year
I have a 2003 Freelander and would NEVER recommend one to someone else... not even someone I hate. In ONE year (starting with 20,000 miles ending with roughly 40,000 miles) I have had heater core go out, both rear pass. window motors fail, heater/ AC fan die, front tie rods went bad, stereo had to be replaced, tranny went out of adjustment, replace tires due to odd unexplainable wearing (at $240 each tire), center console buttons went out... theres more but I don't think it's necessary to list EVERYTHING!
Maintenance costs are high, $99 for a basic oil change due to the engine requiring odd synthetics only, $199 for an alignment...
To put it plain and simple: this vehicle is a noisy, gutless, expensive piece of junk....read morehide

i have a 2003 yellow se3, with 70,200 miles (all highway) currently. I bought the car as a former demo with 9,000 miles. I've had very little problems with my se3 despite all ive read about others on this forum. I had a problem with the ac compressor (it just stopped working) at 20,000 miles but was replaced for free under warranty. At 35000 miles my blinkers stopped working and they replaced several things on the car to figure out what it was. They found out what it was after 2 days, i got many things like the security system replaced for free so i wasnt mad. Besides a speaker busting, ive had NO other problems and definitly consider mine very reliable (much more than my BMW convertible and many previous nice cars, etc.. I love this car so much, fits me perfectly as a single 20's male, and gets lots of attention getting gas. Ive read many bad things about the FREELANDER on here, but i can say that my car has had NONE of those problems. I live on a mountain so in the winter i need a car to go up a steep unplowed slope with least 2 inches of snow and this car does it WITHOUT a problem. It travels right up the hill in 2nd gear with minimal slippage, and i even tested it and stopped it completely on steep slope with 4 inches/icey condition and it took the road quickly with almost no slippage, amazing to me. With 70,000+ now, my car still looks flawless (im a prof. detailer and this car brings me many new clients at gas stations) and i can honestly say it drives as smooth as it did with 20,000 miles. I give the car its REGULAR maintaince every 6,000 miles which can be more expensive but COME ON its a Landy, not a Chevy. The removable hard top is easy for me to take off alone, though others may need 2 people. The Harmon Kardon sound system sounds great even at top volume. My SE3 is so easy to drive no matter what the weather is, i never have to worry on my long commute....read morehide

I have an '03 Freelander and I am currently suing Landrover under the Lemonlaw. There is a short in the car electrical system and the lights are always burning out. I've also had problems with windows - a few times different windows have gone down, then don't go back up. I recently had to have the radiator fixed because the coolant chamber cracked. My car overheated 3 times.
In the past year, I've had the car in the shop over 10 times.
Don't buy this car unless you are ready for a lot of headaches....read morehide

When you buy a Land Rover you problems are far from over,
I have a 2003 se3 Freelander that had an engine failure after 57,000, (whith not garanty) i paid $2500, included de service about $1000. And you need to make an appoinment, its no proble, but you need 3 weaks to do the service.
Nice car, powerful engine, good AWD system. But many problems , broken down multiple times and you need wait for the appoinment .
The service is worst than the car DEALER is not so professional in my area and has been quite rude. I.e. don't call back to update me on my car, talk down to me.
OVERALL, just a bad experience and this car is NOT cheap to service....read morehide

I currently own a 2003 Freelander and every time I hop in the driver's seat I love it ... until it breaks down on me, which happens often.
I have had the Engine Coolant System Fail 3 times. The entire system was overhauled and it failed after that as well.
After one of my scheduled maintenances, they left me with an empty brake fluid reservoir and wanted to charge me extra to fill it!
Intake Manifold was replaced due to a "butterfly caught in it." If you come from a family of mechanics, as do I, this should sound absurd to you. 2 other LR Service Dept�s (other than the ones who made the butterfly claim) said "it is highly improbable that a butterfly would be able to reach the Intake Manifold, let alone cause it to need replacement", in fact they laughed at the very idea of it. One LR Service Dept said Intake Manifold Failure after two years was a frequent problem with Freelanders.
The battery after only two years had to be replaced. This I have completed myself as the dealership said it would be $160 to replace (after they charged me $130+change to diagnose the problem).
The windshield is not tempered properly, and cracks if you use your heated defrost.
The Brush Guard FELL OFF while driving! It took 2 months and 2 dealerships to get fixed.
Paint Job peels and the car has never been up north or exposed to road salting!
The LR Service Dept�s have been very difficult to deal with. I have taken my car in for service in TX, GA, FL, and NM only 2 LR Dealers let me have a loaner car! Apparently, it is not policy to give a loaner car even if you purchased from that dealership.
I tried speaking with Land Rover North America about all of these difficulties, but have found them to impolite and completely unwilling to assist in any manner. They would not let me speak to a supervisor and even told me they do not know who I would address a written complaint to.
If the value had not depreciated so, I would trade it in ... but then again, after having rented other cars, I really love the way mine drives when it works!
If you see a bright "Tangiers Orange" 3 door Freelander at the fuel station, feel free to ask any me any questions about my car. There are very few of us in orange, so chances are it is probably me ... if not, I am sure any of the other Freelander owners would be happy to tell you about their experiences....read morehide

This Landrover is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I used to drive sports cars and recently tried a truck (which was a horrible experience) and from this point forward, I'm sold on the excellent service and care Landrover provides- along with their excellent mini SUV. I owned a 04 freelander se3 I had it for 4 monthy and visited the repair shop 12 times. Yes I was picky but who wouldnt be at that price tag. I finally got so fed up I applied under the lemon law and they fully refunded the price of the car. I am not driving an 05 Jeep liberty. I am amazed at what a descent car is like after landrover. I warn everyone stay away. The repair manager in manhattan told me this car is prone to problems and should be avoided heed his and my advice...read morehide
