Purchased As Used
I bought my 2002 Lexus GS 430 in September, 2010. It had 147,000 km's (92,000 miles). I bought it from a Lexus dealer who serviced it since new. It came with the complete service history which only had 1 problem listed, which turned out to be a Throttle Position Sensor problem in 2007. Other than that, the history listed the usual tires, brakes, oil and fluid changes. It has the sport package, which gives it the 235/45ZR-17 wheels, wooden interior trim for the doors, dash and steering wheel and the Mark Levinson Sound system.
It now has 165,000 km's (103,000 miles). I have changed the oil, and only recently had to replace the front drivers side brake caliper (one of the pistons had a torn rubber seal, causing the brake to drag). Replacing the caliper cost $125.00 for the part and I installed it myself. I don't think that's unreasonable for this mileage and age. I did a lot of research on this model before I bought it and have found the reliability to be very high, and after all, isn't reliability a #1 factor for car buying? I expect to put 300,000 km's + (187,500 miles +) on this car with reasonably good cost of ownership.
The performance is astounding. The 4.3L V8 cranks out 300 HP and 325 Ft/lb torque! The engine has "creamy smooth" power delivery. It will go 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds in full automatic mode and 0-60 MPH in under 5.5 seconds when shifting manually through the gated shifter. It will run the quarter mile in 14 seconds @ 100 MPH! This car is a wolf in sheep's clothing, no one expects that kind of performance from a four door Grand Touring sedan! The handling is amazing. It can go around corners very easily, and holds the road like it is on rails. The ride comfort is great to say the least, although the rear seat leg room is a little tight for adults, but sufficient for kids.
I average 14L/100kms around town with spirited driving, although I have gotten as low as 11 to 12 L/100kms by driving "normally". I usually get 10 L/100kms on the highway @ 110 km/hr. I think this is reasonable fuel mileage for a car of this caliber.
As an owner of a GS 430, I have to say that I am 100% satisfied so far. I don't know what the future will bring for my GS, but I am more than confident that ownership will be a pure joy. My recommendation to you is to do your research thoroughly. Don't just buy a car based on "face value". Research the nitty-gritty details of any car you are considering.
