2006 Lexus GS 430 User Reviews

- Great performance, very comfortable
- Bad value given many missing tech features
I took a test drive today. It is in many ways a great car. In particular performance, power, handling, braking are all excellent. The front seats are very comfortable. The overall ergonomics are excellent. The biggest drawback is the price. The model I test drove was nearly $60K. There are quite a few things missing, which I would expect for this price. I took a CD w/ mp3 songs. There is no mp3 support so it didn't play. I took my iPod. There is not way to play it other than to use something like an FM transmitter. Why can't Lexus supply some kind of integration? I took my Treo 650. The GS430 has Bluetooth, but the Treo 650 didn't work! The salesman said there is some kind of workaround for the Treo, something about a firmware problem. Bottom line: Treo 650 is common and should work. Not sure what Bluetooth phones do work. We were driving and I decided to try to enter a destination. Guess what: nav input is disabled when car is moving. Even a passenger (in this case the salesman) couldn't enter a destination. We had to pull over to enter destination :-) Then I started driving again. The nav software is easy to use and pretty well designed, but the large 7" LCD screen has very pixelated (blocky) graphics. It was a sunny day, the sunroof was open, and the sun washed out the LCD display. I had to close sunroof to see screen!! (I'm not kidding.) I played with the radio. The AM reception is horrible. Okay, AM is never very good, but this is the worst AM radio I have ever heard. Unfortunately I sometimes listen to AM. Then I noticed that while nav is working, the radio info disappears. I find this annoying. I wanted to adjust side mirror. To do this there is a drop down entry pad to the left of the steering wheel. Nice idea to keep such infrequently used functions hidden. Unfortunately I could not see the entry pad because the steering wheel blocked my vision! This is an awful design. It is really too bad. The car is gorgeous. The performance is really great. And it is very comfortable. But for $60K (high $50's), Lexus needs to fix some simple ergonomics. Lexus, if you are reading this, please fix LCD graphics and visibility on sunny day, fix AM reception, let me see radio info duirng navigation, let me enter nav info while car is moving (at least when passenger is present, which you know because of seat sensor), reconfigure drop down controls so driver can see them, fix Bluetooth problems, provide mp3 support ($50 portable CD players do!!), provide some kind of iPod integration, please support navTraffic, and why is sat radio a dealer installed option (for $60K this should be standard). Also, the LCD screen is huge (7"), which is nice if you use navigation, otherwise it is too big. But navigation is option. Basically the car is designed for navigation, but it is an option, so you need to add this to base price.
