This replaced a 2009 Nissan 370Z. I got tired of hearing from my wife about "practicality". And the CX5 has served me very well, though dropping 200 horsepower puts you in a very different league!
We also have a 2014 VW Jetta Sportswagen, and the difference in these two cars is worth noting. The VW is low and smooth (we upgraded to 8" wide rubber); the CX5 sits upright and is preferable for traffic situations. The CX5 is the result of "SkyActive" redesign rendering, and this is actually not just a marketing buzzword. The construction is lighter weight and higher-strength steel, so your center of gravity is not much higher than a conventional (non-crossover) vehicle. Even though there's 8.5" of ground clearance, which will make this our go-to vehicle for winter travel. Despite the height, and the narrowness of the Toyo 19" OEM tires, this stays even with the VW in all normal driving conditions.
Most Mazda dealers will try to "upgrade" you to an AWD model. Don't bite. 90% of buyers don't have any reason to use AWD (unless you live in the winter blizzards of North Dakota). For everyone else -- AWD is higher initial cost, higher maintenance, reduced gas mileage, less snappy performance. (Note -- don't try to save $$ by getting the 2.0 liter instead of the 2.5. You want the better engine.)
Some people have complained about the TomTom nav system, but this does all that we ask of it. And the speakers could use probably a bit more bass oomph ... but that's what we have home systems for.
I downgraded 1-star on appearance, though, because it's real hard to pick your car out in a lot of near-identical appearing crossovers. You have to be behind the wheel to understand why you made the best choice of the bunch.
