- Pros
- Great fuel economy zippy and fun to drive
- Cons
- only problem is I should have purchased the touring model
Purchased As New
I have had this car for nearly 17k miles and 0 problems. I purchased this car as a commuter car so outside of auto I did not choose any other options. I have used it on one road trip and the manual 5speed would have been useful with the extra gears to climb hills I was able to keep it wound up at 60 but everyone else is moving at 65-70 one more gear would have made the difference. The touring model has some nicer features better seats and most come with the center armrest which would be nice at times. Other than that it has been a great car. Does wonderful in the snow which was my only concern when purchasing was how well it will drive in the snow....read morehide

- Pros
- Handling/steering, price, fuel economy, standard equipment, interior, manual trans
- Cons
- Clutch feel, lack of optional features, sometimes-noisy suspension
Purchased As New
I bought this car after test driving several of its competitors including the Scion xD, Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and the much-lauded Ford Fiesta. This car won hands down because of it's sublime handling, well-built interior, and reasonable price.
The handling is the best thing about it. The steering is perfectly weighted and the car has excellent grip and well-controlled body motions. It's also been great in the Illinois snow. I went from a V6 to this little 100hp engine and it feels plenty peppy. Fuel economy has been better than EPA estimates. I got over 36 mpg on a 350-mile trip doing 75+ mph most of the way and have been getting about 33 mpg on average in town. Insurance is dirt cheap.
Although I love the feel of the snappy, precise shifter, I find that the clutch is too light (my previous car's clutch felt like trying to smash a brick with your foot though). The throttle is also very light so it took me a while to adjust to driving this car smoothly.
The other main disappointment I have is the lack of some now-ubiquitous features. The Sport model isn't available with cruise control and no Mazda2 is available with a USB port or Bluetooth or telescopic steering wheel. I'd also like the option of a sunroof. The standard features for the price, however, are impressive.
I love the interior of this car though. The materials are nice and the whole cabin has a high-quality feeling even though the plastics are mostly hard. The doors make a solid thud when closed and the seats are wonderful! It feels better-built than its competitors. Also, I'm about 6'1" and I have way more room than I need. Headroom is amazing.
My last complaint is the suspension noise. It's normally unobtrusive. However, I've noticed when the temperature falls below 15-ish degrees, the suspension makes creaking sounds when I hit large bumps.
Overall, these few complaints hardly detract from an otherwise superb little car. I plan on keeping this one for a long time. I'd definitely recommend!...read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a recent college grad just starting out. Good car for a good price. Love the green color. I bought the manual and I drive into Boston from NH daily so I bought this car for the commute. I get around 39 mpg which is awesome considering I spend a good portion of my driving time in traffic. The engine does get kinda of loud past 60 mph. Gas tank is small....read morehide

.There is NO automatic locking system when the car is either put into gear or exceeds a certain MPH. If you forget to lock the car when you get in it then you are a sitting duck at an intersection to be carjacked! And driver and passenger can open car when driving and roll out! Likewise when you take the key out of the ignition - the doors do not automatically unlock. I HATE THIS!!! -
Would rather have security on the DOOR level with the keyless entry than at the IGNITION level with another key being used - object to keep people OUT OF THE CAR!.
NO PLACE TO STORE ANYTHING out of site on the console and the glove box is too far to reach from the drivers side Door locks do NOT belong here - belong on the door - have to keep REACHING into the vehicle to lock.
Jury is still out on how the heating system will clear snow off the windshields -blower looks to small for the window size and the back wiper is off center leaving uncleared mist.....read morehide0 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- Great fuel economy, fun to drive, very reliable, extremely affordable
- Cons
- A little bumpy sometimes.

I'm a poor college student whose old car broke down over the summer. Buying the Mazda2 brand new off the lot was cheaper than buying many comparable cars from 2007 - 2009 used. I loved it the moment I got in for the test drive. I had driven the Ford Fiesta before, and I found the Mazda2 to be much more comfortable and roomy on the inside. Four of my 6 and a half foot tall frat boy friends can fit in the car with me comfortably, which they are always surprised by. It doesn't have a lot of horsepower, but it's so small that it's only noticable when going up very steep hills. Even then it's not really a problem. My only complaint is that sometimes when I hit a bump too hard (pothole, sewer grate, speed bump, whatever) it will make my cd player skip. It's just a minor annoyance. As far as cons, it's hardly the worst. I absolutely suggest the 2, it's been a great first car and I plan on keeping it for as long as I can....read morehide

The MAZDA 2 is really a dream to drive, with outstanding performance coupled with economy. This car is a real pleasure to drive and is nimble enough to not only tackle the most demanding city traffic, but zip along the open highway with the ease of a much more powerful (fuel wasting) vehicle. Always look forward to getting behind the wheel....read morehide

- Pros
- Small car handling, parking and zipping around town! Fuel Economy!
- Cons
- Lackluster acceleration, some road noise, and a small gas tank.
Purchased As New
I've had this car for two weeks, now, and it has really grown on me! I bought it to cut back on costs, so this was not a typical "car buyer attitude" purchase (low emotional involment). I must say, except for the loss of power/luxury, this car really performs well! Manual Transmission: 1'st tank of gas earned me an average of 32.5 mpg overall-with about 2/3 tank used in city and 1/3 hwy. I just filled up for the second time and earned 34.6mpg overall- using the car approx. 2/3 on the hwy and 1/3 in the city....
This little "2" handles really well on the road: good grip, turns corners easily/comfortably, and goes up steep-long highway grades with 4 adults, the a/c blasting, and cruise control set at 70mph. Front seat comfort is good, while back seat comfort for two adults is good-3 adults will be uncomfortable, so I'd say keep those trips fairly local. (rear seat passengers complain a bit about the headrests being to far forward).
This car would be a great first car/first new car/car for someone moving up into something newer and/or better!
Other than the lack of acceleration, for which I realize that this car is not built for speed, road noise at hwy speed (music helps drown this out), and a small fuel tank (11.1 gallons), I really like this car!
I'll update after a bit of time goes by.......read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm 6'4" and my 78 year old father is a little taller. We spent three days zoom-zooming across Wyoming in perfect comfort on wonderfully curvy and scenic roads. Many times I looked down to see we were going 85 mph. The ride certainly wasn't too rough and the car impressed us both with how quiet it was. We ran the a/c all the time and we got between 38 and 43 mpg. Miles per gallon was not a priority, just a nice bonus. Great ride....read morehide
