After a careless driver totaled my '04 Jetta GLS for me, I started hunting around for a new car. My Jetta was loaded with great features and a pleasure to drive, but due to the insane repair costs and reliability issues I had with it, I will never buy another VW.
I've had some extremely reliable but boring cars in the past including a Camry, an Accord, and a Civic. This time I wanted to find the perfect marriage of reliability, safety, features, fuel economy, and fun, since I love to drive. In all of my research, the Mazda3 just kept popping up.
I've had the car for about a month now. I like the exterior and interior styling, the gas mileage is great with the Skyactiv engine, and it handles really well (turns on a dime), although the suspension is rougher and tighter than I'm used to. Also, like other reviewers have stated, the transmission is a little funny. I think that's the sacrifice you have to make for the MPGs.
My biggest disappointment with this car is the air conditioning, which is pretty important during Texas summers. Once the car warms up and you get moving, it's great. However, when it's 100*+ outside and I come out of the grocery store into the heat, load all of the groceries into the car, start the car, and turn on the A/C... it blows hot air until I get down the road a little bit. I am NOT looking forward to next summer in this car!
Overall, I do think it's a good buy. I can't really speak to its reliability yet, but I don't plan on having it more than a few years, so hopefully it won't be an issue for me. When I drove off the lot in '04 in my brand new Jetta I was in LOVE! With the Mazda3, not so much, but I definitely could have done worse for the price.
