After 192,000 miles, this car is still fun to drive everyday. I have 2 other cars, but this car is the one I look forward driving. When compared to the 2002 turbo charged Subaru WRX and 180 mph Toyota Matrix, it was considered underpowered. However like Car and Driver wrote in a review, "Some cars just feel right though they don't deliver great numbers." I never felt the car was underpowered but I did add a K&N cold air filter, turbo exhaust system and reprogrammed the computer timing. End result: a car that feels like a sports car with more than power than need. Similar feel of the acclaimed Mazda Miata. 32 mph at 75, 29-30 at 80 mph (ok I drive fast on CA highways.) Still the original clutch. Can't beat that!...read morehide

Purchased As Used
I've had a lot of cars in my 55 years of driving - the last one before I purchased a 1-1/5 yr old 2002 Mazda Protege 5 was a Ford Explorer (piece of garbage). I just had my first major repair expense - had the timing belt replaced - at about 98,000 miles! Have never had any other problems with this car and would buy a new one if they still made them. Doesn't have all the (unnecessary) bells and whistles, but is an extremely reliable car....read morehide
