2008 Sport PRHT - A lot of fun A little money

by Jimmy C. from White Plains, MD (10/03/08)
Pros:33 mpg, red dash lights, smooth shifter, PRHT, drivers seat height adjuster
Cons:A little hard to get in to and out of.

I 've been looking at miata's for years. I've always wanted one but I didn't want a soft top. When mazda came out with the PRHT that sealed the deal. I've only had my 2008 sport for one week but I know this is the car for me. It's fun to drive on back roads and in town. The gear changes (5mt) are quick and precise. Once inside the car fits like a glove. All controls are at my fingertips. I particularly like the audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel. The PRHT draws attention every time I raise or lower it.

I just had my first fill-up and i got 33 mpg. Outstanding

I have a little trouble getting into the driver's seat (might be old age) but once there it's worth it.

This is a great little car, I only wish I had bought one sooner. If your looking for a sports car you can't go wrong with this one

Tons of fun!

by Susan from Pittsburgh, PA (9/30/08)
Pros:Get 28-30mpg around town even with all the hills.
Cons:Ride is rough on concrete interstates.

Have had the car almost a year and no complaints. Ride is what you would expect in a roadster, gets fabulous gas milage and is a lot of fun to drive. Handles very well with lots of horsepower. Great car for the money!

MX-5: Getting there is way more than half the fun!

by Kevin from McKinney, TX (9/28/08)
Pros:No more fun for the buck. Looks great and carves up the backroads.
Cons:The Bose sound system doesn't measure up. Audio Pilot doesn't really work, no IPOD jack, nor MP3s

I grew up on British roadsters and the the latest MX-5 provides all the thrills of the classic MGs, Austins and Jaguars and more without all the maintenance headaches. At 6'3" I thought the car would be too cramped, but the 2008 MX-5 fits like a glove with all the controls at the fingertips. The highlight of the car is the 6-speed, close-ratio manual gearbox that really enhances the slightly under-powered engine, although the third series of the Miata backs up its beefy look with the most powerful engine yet at about 170 horses. And the wide torque range is impressive. The PRHT is nice and provides a much quieter ride, but I'm a traditionalist and opted for the ragtop. And while the PRHT is down in 12 seconds, the ragtop goes up or down in about 4 seconds and I can already be at 60 mph before the PRHT cycle is complete. ;-) But the best part of the car is the handling. The new MX-5 has a 50-50 weight distribution with a driver onboard and sticks to the road better than any car I've driven. Hit the backroads and look for a curve with a recommended speed of 35. Convert it using Miata math, take it at 65, accelerate out of the turn in fourth at over 70 and you are still thinking to yourself that the car could have handled more, but you might not. Try that in one of the GM sportster knockoff and you'd likely end up bottoms up in a ditch. This car is just built to take all the road you can throw at it. After all, Skip Barber picked the Miata for its racing school.

Most fun car we have ever driven

by D Hooper from Allen, Tx (8/31/08)
Pros:Fun to drive, great gas milage 33 MPG highway the hardtop is a blast
Cons:the Bose system is awesome, but why no access for the Ipod

we bought this car for my wife, we wanted our first convertible, I knew enough to know a hardtop would be less noisy, besides everytime we are operating the top it attracts attention and comments. We have the PHT Grand Touring with stablizer, and manual paddle shifters on the steering wheel for those times you want to play like a race car driver. To sum up we love this car with no regrets.

Lots of "Zoom, Zoom"

by Michael from Orange, Texas (7/06/08)
Pros:Very fun to drive. Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) available. Easy to customize.
Cons:Cramped seating, Less storage for PRHT model

I've driven my MX-5 Miata Grand Touring w/ PRHT for 13000 miles already and I LOVE THIS CAR! "Miata" is Old High German for "Reward," and this car is truly that and more. I hear lots of people talk down to this car to the Pontiac Solstice GXP, BMW Z4, Porsche Boxster, and the Honda S2000. I test drove a Solstice and was disappointed by the way it drove compared to the MX-5 Miata. With a little tweaking from a very large aftermarket, my car will run circles around them for cheaper prices. Also, the Honda S2000 and BMW Z4 require Super Unleaded to run properly. With today's gas prices, is that really worth the extra dollars spent on extra ponies?

My biggest complaint about the car is it's comfort, especially for tall people. You also lose the storage area behind the seats if you have the Power Retractable Hard Top, but I didn't buy my MX-5 Miata to be a cargo carrier. I'm also not too fond of the "tombstone" look of the center console. I love my PRHT. Do the Solstice, Z4, S2000, and Boxster have ANY hard top options? NOPE! You're stuck only with soft tops!

Lots of choices for aftermarket items, the large number of Miata clubs and events in the U.S.A, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and the Spec- Miata racing circuit show that the MX-5 Miata is truly the "world's favorite sports car." I look forward to more "zoom zoom" in my MX-5 Miata for years to come.

a good judge of Miata

by JLS from CA (6/29/08)
Pros:beautiful car. Goes where you point it. I have had three of them.
Cons:a bit too wide, body dents way to easily, i get dinged all the time.

this is my third miata. I love them. My favorite was the 2000. It just was great. This on is a 2008, a head turner, and yet I crave the simplicity of my earlier models. The stereo skips all the time, little thing like that. That stuff drives me insane. I know its small, but you just want all of the car to be great. I will get a Series 1 or an Eos when my lease is out.

Best Zoom-Zoom for the buck out there.

by Dan from western , NC (6/16/08)
Pros:fuel economy,no cowl shake, no timing belt @60K,blast to drive
Cons:17"s replacement tire cost & no spare tire

This car is a absolute blast to drive. mine is a 08 touring with the upgraded suspension package & the Bilstien shocks are worth the upgrade. The 6 speed tranny was a little to tight until the first service @3K, now it shifts perfectly & the engine seems to have a little more get up & go with a few miles on it (3100). the more miles you put on it the better the car gets. Fuel mileage on 91 octane is averaged @ 33mpg mixed interstate & 2 lane driving. This car is a improvement so far from the 05 & earlier models. I have no regrets on this car so far & if it was hit/ totaled in a accident. Then I wouldnt hesitate going to the dealer the next day & buying another one. test drive one down a winding road & you will see.

Miata in my viens

by Joey L from Dallas, Texas (6/15/08)
Pros:Quick, economical, fun to drive, nimble, and reliable
Cons:none in 9 years!

I have an older series 2 Miata (9yrs old) and I am still enjoying every ride. This is my 2nd miata and I must say that they have been the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned.Gas milage is outstanding, and the insurance is not too bad for a sports car. I am from the old school and I thought I would never buy a foreign car because of the lack of performance...well the Miata changed my view quickly! When I was asked to transport a friend's Miata to his home about 70 miles away, I knew immediatly that i was buying an MX5! That was in 1993 and I am still sold on this pint sized super car.
