2006 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
There are 10 user reviews for the C55 AMG Sport Sedan trim shown below
- Step on the gas- you'll figure it out- quick.
- Lot's of "look-alike" MB's out there.
I've read all the reviews and some have great points. I bought it as soon as it was available and was going to plunge in on the C32 but am I glad I did my homework and waited for the C55. Let's start w/ it's looks- I love it! Almost 2 years later I still look at and sigh. The quad pipes gleam in the sun and the tires are fat enough to make a vette look svelt. The body work is muscular but understated and that may be part of an issue I have. MB offfers many "appearance packages" on lesser rides of the C family. The C55 is indeed another animal completely and should never be looked at in the same light as another C. Just look under the hood-there is the signature of the AMG artisan who lovingly hand-crafted my baby's engine. The ride is superb! Taught but not punishing and tons of torque sending it from stand still to light speed in the blink of an eye. The deeply supported leathers keep your rear firmly planted (and warmed) through every pulse rasing turn you enter. The fat rubber keeps you planted on all surfaces except wet inclines where I have lost traction. However, delete traction control and you can send the C55 into a plume of smoke only the FDNY can get you out of! At nearly $400 per tire- I won't be doing that again. I have no complaints about the car itself- it can run with nearly anything and I'm sure it could hang with the "super car" crowd or at least its numbers say so (for a fraction of the price). OK, here are the down sides- the rims get banged up easily- I don't think the coating on the AMG rims is up to NY curbs / pot holes and I've already resurfaced all 4 (not cheap) by MB. It has 4 doors but please don't think this is a big sedan- it is not. Back seat/ leg room is always an issue and the trunk has trouble with today's oversized drivers (gofl that is!). Also, to echo a previoulsy raised point- the navi I have on my MB sucks-period. It is not intuitive, all inputs have to be typed in with a silly little joystick that makes Atari's 2600's look like state of the art. No touch screen and in general it gives the directions fine but I must give it a rather big thumb's down. Most don't really know what AMG is all about and fewer still know that there is a C out there that can light up anything it smells near it. Most know that you are in a MB but they don't know you can knock em out with the drop of your right foot at any time you choose- or better yet, don't - they'll still have no idea what you're packing behind the resculpted CLK front end. In case you didn't know- MB had to ditch the regular C front in favor of the longer, sleeker new CLK front end to accommodate the sheer mass and increased need for breathing air of the naturally aspirated V8 that replaced (thank goodness) the supercharged V6 that the short-lived C32 was supplied with. The change makes all the difference and if you look back- they price increase was truly nominal considering how much more ride you get vs the C32. I feel bad for the C32 owners because the C55 is so superior to it and perhaps many other competitors- I was glad to see input from converted M3 and S4 owners-I've never driven either but am aware that they are beasts in their own right. Bottom line-get one now, especially a pampered one 1 or 2 years old w/ less then 20k miles-I'm sure it will be a bargain with maximal reward every time you here that sweet growl rumble just outside your window!...read morehide

- Excellent power and brakes, great looks, extremely comfortable front seats.
- GPS not user friendly.
This is one powerful car that stops on a dime and handles extremely well for a sedan! Having owned other sports cars (Pantera, BOSS 429 Mustang, Porsche etc) I find te C55 to be the best of ALL worlds! It has four doors and a reasonable size trunk, but still gives me all the pleasures of a great handling sports car! The price could be considered a little high for a four door sedan, but when compared to a real sports cars, I find it a real value....read morehide

- fuel economy, styling, traction control, headlight washers, floor mats
- brake dust, small interior, back seat is difficult for two
I have driven and riden in this car for about a year and don't understand how Mercedes has not figured out how to make a brake system that doesn't leave my front wheels dirty after minimal amount of driving.
The look of the interior is great but I could use some more room for my belly....I can stear with my gut. I broke a speaker cover trying to get out of the thing!!
If these problems were fixed I would buy 3 of them for my wives....read morehide

- Extreme power, super handling, nice, but understated styling
- None for me
I used to drive a BMW, but the new styling made me look around. Boy, I'm glad I did. The C55 is much more fun to drive than either the 3 or 5 series BMW.
Only a supercar could challenge the C55 in terms of speed or handling. It literally blows everything else away, but in total comfort for the driver.
After owning it 2 months, I'm thrilled with the value. I didn't realize how much car I had bought for 60K....read morehide

- Understated hot-rod attitude, nice exterior AMG appearance, comfortable interior, best package
- gas mileage (a few of us do care!), stiff back seats
The 2006 model C55 feels like a 911 with 4 doors. (I've had 2 late model 911's.) The overall handling, acceleration, & ride package is nothing short of 99% perfect for those who want a small performance sedan. I drove the E55 and felt that it was too big of a car and steering was not as crisp. The AMG folks know that the C55 is only for those few Benz hardcore buyers that have come to appreciate the overall package over the one or two best-of-class spec's (i.e., M3, S4, etc.) Once you have come to like the Mercedes feel, it's hard to switch. I have test driven the new Infiniti M45, the M3 & S4. The C55 is the winner for me because of its styling (still looks like a classy sedan) and the overall quality package. Don't buy one without the premium audio and Command GPS options. They make the C55 feel more like the bigger Benz siblings. The AMG interior, notably the Nappa leather, is comfortable and sporty. (I'm only 5'6''; so it is just perfect). The Engine! The power and torque combo makes the C55 a hair shy from the supercar circle. Lots of ready to give power with rubber-burning torque. The 18" wheel/tire and AMG suspension combo is so good that no word can possibly explains that feel at a 50mph cornering (although with a mild understeer - but I think it's just my rusty skills from driving the CL500 for too long.) It's alive; it's alive!
My wife and in-laws never care much for those 911's, Benz coupes I've had; but the C55 is a family sedan afterall in a layman's eyes. I have regained some mainstream family man respect from them with the C55. While parked at work and amidst the many other C class mobiles, no one gives mine a second glance (negative for those single guys that want the proper attentions). To me, it's a comfort factor and maybe, just maybe, a sign of a purposeful compromise only possible with maturity - the kind we guys grow into kicking and screaming!
I think the C55 is a very special package to the intended few. Don't read about it; test drive one - that's the only way to know. But shop responsibily, it's not cheap (loaded at US$68K) and is probably the most expensive car in its size class. Worth it? in between my gas station visits, I think it's worth every penny....read morehide

- The next better thing must be flying a 777
- Occasionally mistaken tor the c230 that everybody else is driving
A dream on four wheels. Start up the engine and listen to the sound and you will reconsider looking at other cars in the class.
I love the AMG suspension, the steering and how playful and aggressive the engine responds.
We got the car with all the options for a little over 60k and to be honest, I would have paid more....do not tell MB, i said that...:)
The seats are comfortable and no problem on longer trips, the leg room is created for tall Germans and the sound is like in my living room. The trunk is spacious and holds my sons stroller and travel bags. One thing I miss....nobody wants to race me....you know the situation at the light....they all let me have it and stay behind me...:(...read morehide
