- Good fuel economy, excellent diesel, very comfortable
- Car is too soft & "floats", acceleration can be uneven, stereo / nav needs redesign
We have really enjoyed our new Mercedes, searching for better gas mileage and good performance compared to our previous BMW 5 series sports sedan.
The fuel economy is averaging 26 MPG or so. Frankly, this car makes the most sense for those that are on the freeway, as it can average over 30MPG. Stop and start is about 23MPG- a hybrid would be a better choice for city only driving, but for clear highway miles, you'll do very well.
Like the other reviews, you generally "wouldn't know it is a diesel". The seven speed automatic, at times, however, seems geared for "slow" and "step on it", not a happy medium. The car is very, very comfortable for the driver and all passengers.
The car is far too softly sprung- it needs the sports suspension option available for the gas models. It'll remind you of an older Cadillac or possibly some Lexus models- who says buyers who want good fuel economy wouldn't want a modern ride? With an engine tuned for the highway, wallowing down the road at 85 or 90 on a soft suspension is not the best experience- the ride is better around town.
The NAV / stereo needs a complete redesign. Neither the satellite nor the ipod interface work with the voice commands for the radio / nav / cd. The iPod interface is atrocious, simply horrible. (The iPod continues to "play" through every tune while you are using other audio, a poor design choice.)
I do like the car's comfort and economy, but feel that a sport suspension option, better integrated audio / nav, and a differently tuned transmission would be big improvements.
