2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

- Stupid fast....
- Gas mileage
Purchased As Used
After having a couple kids I missed having the fast sports car in my garage. I traded my selfish fun (Porsche) for a Jeep Rubicon that the whole family could enjoy in the summer. That left me yearning for a daily driver that was fast too. What to do....what to do.
Enter the 2008 E63 AMG. I picked up a used 2008 with low miles out of Dallas TX, and the car is simply amazing. This one is absolutely loaded: black on black, ventilated seats, panoramic roof, trunk closer, voice command, etc. etc.
This car is definitely not for the faint of heart. It sounds like a race car, and produces enough horsepower to outrun almost anything on the road (yes, Corvettes and 911's too). Those cool new Shelby Mustangs? They look amazing in my rear-view mirror (no offense to Mustang lovers, they are really cool cars, but 517HP will do that). If you turn off ESP and gun it from a stop, it will literally smoke the rear tires like an old school muscle car....crazy.
The interior is wonderful; firm seats, quite, and all the creature comforts. The suspension has three settings, and there are three different ways of shifting, so you can either cruise in lazy comfort mode, or dial it up and drive it like a sports car. I considered an M5 too, but there were just too many settings on that car for me. My guess is the M5 is more fun on a track because it's almost infinitely adjustable, but for raw gut wrenching HP in normal driving, the AMG can't be beat (except by that new Cadillac CTSV...but GM vs AMG?)
I drove a new S-Class before buying this car, and it was just beautiful and amazing, and may be my next car; but it is more about quite luxury. The AMG is more about performance and raw driving. This is NOT a car for someone looking for an ultra luxury, super quiet ride; the engine is too loud and the suspension, even on the comfort setting, is more stiff. It also runs extremely low profile tires, which also makes it much sportier....you always know what you're driving on. It handles amazingly well for a heavy 4-door sedan, but my guess is in any canyon, those 911's and Vette's I passed off the stoplight will be hugging my bumper and flashing their lights to pass. But hey: I can put 3 sets of golf clubs in my trunk and two kids in the back seats...;-)
The cons: This is not a car you'd want to take out in snow...it has enough trouble keeping traction on dry pavement. If you live where it snows, a backup 4X4 is mandatory. The gas mileage is horrendous, about as bad as my old F-250 pickup...but what do you want from a massive V-8? If you go used: be sure the breaks are okay, rotors cost $1,000....A PIECE. Yup, a brake job is about $3,000 by the time they get all the parts on. Also, I don't think I'd even think about owning this car out of warranty.....WAY too many gadgets to break. My '08 is still under bumper to bumper. And finally, even if you have a ton of cash, I would recommend buying this car used. Mine had a sticker of over $100K and I paid half just two years later. These cars don't hold their value like a 911. If I'm going to drop close to 6 figures on a new car, it's going to be another Porsche.....just because of the resale..or maybe a Z06.
But if you want a luxurious, tight, well built sedan that will blow the doors off a new Vette....with your two kids in the back seat....get yourself an E63; it's a car I literally can't wait to drive every day.
Final comment: If you want to be stared at and brag, this is also not the car for you; as it pretty much looks like a regular E-Class. Only car guys and gals know the difference. Yes, it's subtly more sporty (lower, cool wheels and some body effects), but for the most part it's a "sleeper"...which I love. The only comments I've heard from other people is when I start it up...they will "whats in that thing? It sounds like a race car". You also get a crazy amount of young kids in Subaru WRX's and EVO's who surprisingly don't what this AMG can do..hehehe.......read morehide

- Awesome car. This is the fastest, most elegant car I've ever owned. A true swiss-army knife!
- Navigation unit a bit dated. Wish it had better graphics, with touch-screen.
I have owned many GT-type cars, from Ford Mustangs, to an '04 BMW M3, to an '04 MB C32 AMG, to an '06 Lexus IS350. This '08 E63 AMG is everything I was looking for in a car. It has enough 'look at me' appeal - but not in an obnoxious way. And you'd better be prepared to hit the gas, because the acceleration is downright exhilerating!...read morehide

- Overall performance, civility, and subtle styling. Easy on the body.
- Nothing pertaining to the car.
Great drive for anyone wanting a nice balance of unstated style, forgiving ride, and a kick in the pants performance. However, MB nickels and dimes the customer to death with add ons that can be purchased through the dealer. In this price range, buyers of this car expect the most ubiquitous of accessories (bluetooth, ipod kit, rubber floor mats) to be standard without having to worry about a hundred here and a hundred there to get them....read morehide

- Excellent accelaration and aguility. The best performance Sport car in a sedan,
- None as of Yet
After giving up my E55 amg and upgrading to the E63 I was stunned by the extra 38 horse power from the previous model. it feels much more powerful than what it is. I definatelly recommend this vehicle to the performance enthusiastic.
