I researched, test-drove, and studied all the diesel cars available in the US and found the GL350 Bluetec to be on the top of my list, because of the seating capacity. The Audi Q7 TDI followed second, since its 3rd row was better than the BMW X5d, but I wasn't keen on the Q7's body style -- felt like it too much body and clanking in front. However, all three performed well in comparison to their non-diesel counterparts. The BMW X5d was my favorite body style, but the seating capacity was too tight and stiff for me justify its price. I was also keen on the VW Toureg TDI, which I felt drove better than the Audi and BMW -- but, again, the seating capacity was a deterrent.
The GL350 Bluetec launches, turns and brakes very well. Since it's a diesel, the torque makes up for the smaller engine and the mileage. At the gas station, it feels great only paying $2.99/gallon for diesel, as oppose to $3.49/gallon for premium. In other words, you fill-up at less frequency and less amount. (As oppose to the Lexus Hybrid or other vehicles, diesel is less carbon footprint -- so it's more green!)
My GL350 Bluetec has the P1 package, which is enough and perfect. The memory settings allows for more than 2 drivers and the press-button feature for folding/unfolding the rear seats beats Audi, BMW and VW. The luxurious feeling the driver and the front-passenger experiences is shared with the 2nd and 3rd row passengers.
One of the little quirks I looked for was whether the 2nd row seats could tilt back. Only the MB GL350 Bluetec and the Audi Q7 TDI had this feature, but the MB tilted better. Why do I care about? Because on long trips, I want to give my back passengers the ability to lean back and relax -- a nice feature the front passenger and van passengers have.
I also look for how wide the doors open and whether you can load a 60" TV, Ikea boxes, and Home Depot supplies in there. The MB GL350 was the best, followed by Audi Q7.
Lastly, unlike the American SUV's, this vehicle does not look huge. It's got a classic style -- much better than the ML series. (I thought about getting the ML, but I did not like the body style from the back.)
