- Seats 7 adults very comfortably. Looks good. Feels good when driving it - that is when it works!
- Airmatic shocks unreliable. Steering fails. Water pump breaks down. Windshiled breaks
Purchased As Used
While the car looks great and feels great when it works, the Mercedes Benz GL 500 (actually a 550 engine) is one of the worst cars one can buy. It breaks down so frequently and runs up huge repair bills that you wish you had opted for something else.
I bought it for my family of 6 people. The third row of seats are great for children with long legs - better than the BMW X5. A Lincoln Navigator feels boxy and bulky and even a Cadillac Escalade is less comfortable. But now I regret not buying the Cadillac Escalade.
The GL does not live up to the reputation of a Mercedes Benz. I have a 2002 C200 and that has been running without any major problem for more than 10 years. The GL on the other hand has been a pain from the first week. I took it to a car wash and the windscreen broke when one of the wiper blades was not gently brought back. There were two more such incidents in the next 3 years - and when i complained i was told that you have to treat it gently. Mercedes Benz never admitted that the tension in those wipers is too taut and that there was a manufacturing flaw in the wipers.
But the windscreen problem pales in comparison to the real problem - the airmatic shocks sag and the car limps on one side. Spend $2,000 to get it fixed and 3 months later the second side sags and then 3 months later the third side...
The car has done just over 50,000 miles and has never been used for off roading.
The GL 500 and all Mercedes Benz GLs are just not worth the bother. They should discontinue the car.
