Let me start off by saying that I have been a LIFE LONG LOVER of the SL series Mercedes. I am in my mid-forties. I fell in love with this car when I was about 13 or 14 years old...before I ever fell in love with any girl! The SL Mercedes was a car that I have loved every model, every new change, everything about, but thought that it would always be a far off dream. Yes. I have dreamed about this car.
Recently, I woke up...and started living the dream. I found a 2005 SL 500 with the sport package and panorama roof. It was love all over again. I drove it...and purchased it. It is one dream that so far has been better in reality than in my dreams.
I have had several sport cars in my time, nothing that would be considered exotic or fancy (nissans and mitsubishi). The SL 500 is like a whole other world compared to anything that I have ever driven!!! Subdued power. Performance. Luxury. Technology. Comfort. Cache. This car is 7 years old when I purchased it. I keep getting people who stop at lights to say "NICE CAR!!!" or I get winks and waves from women (young and old) while driving down the road. I have had kids in muscle cars pull up and want to race. Now, this is definately not a sports car, but handles better than the sports cars I have owned. Not as quick off the line or low end...so I would not race anyone, but above 50 MPH and you hit the accelerator....IT IS WICKED FAST!!!! It is the ONLY car in my opinion that I have ever seen (including other exotic cars) that looks good with the top up or top down.
Speaking of the top. You could almost charge admission for the people who want to witness that top go down and up. Yes, other cars do the hard-top convertable thing...but not as beautifully as the SL Mercedes. It is like a ballet or a work of art.
The only things that I do not like, but will gladly live with to own this gorgeous vehicle, is that navigation systems is without a question that worse I have ever used. The stereo system is not what you would expect in a vehicle of this category, but with the cabin size the stereo works adequately. Inside storage - you will not be drinking many beverages in this car...nowhere to put them. Also, nowhere to put something as simple as your cell phone if you do not want it in a compartment or in the glove box. I hang it out the ashtray since I am not a smoker.
Wonderful car!!! Oh, my gas mileage averages around 18 when in the city and not aggressive with the foot, and over 21 on the highway. I have not gone on an extended highway trip yet, but think I could probably get 23 or so....read morehide

- build quality, appearance, ride are top notch for the cost
- electronics are still german, performance is mercedes
this is the best hard-top convertible you can find on the planet. every dollar spent on this car is worth it.
a sporty car, not a sports car, dont go chase a bimmer or porsche, its not designed for it.
the electric gadgets are still german, the engineers should go take a look at Lexus.
the ride height ajustment should be 1 inch lower,...read morehide

- Good looking
- Value, Performance.
I traded my old 1997 SL500, and bought a 2006 SL500. It is really well developed and great and very very comfortable. I owned 17 Mercedes cars since I got my driving licence, I never faced any problem with any Mercedes car. Mercedes is a very great car. I never bought any car other than Mercedes except for HUMMER, Volvo, and Ferrari....read morehide

Traded 2004SL 500 for a new SL 500 2005 due to too many problems Mercedes could not resolve. 2005 not any better. After owning it for one week, car in the repair shop for the 2nd straight week. Vibration in the steering wheel between 65 to 75mph. Car pulls to the right. Wind noice at passanger side, engine clatters like a diesel during take off from stand still. Motor mounts are being replaced. Rear wheels out of balnce causing vibration in seats. Mercedes Rep claims tires have flat spots. Hard to believe at a $95,000 dollar price tag. Highly recommend test driving any new SL for a long stretch at high speed. Planning on trading in my brand new SL for a Porsche....read morehide

- Outstanding handling. Powerful car,
I just took delivery on a beautiful black SL500. The first day I had it I drove until the tank was nearly empty. Wonderful dream car. I love it!

- Sleek, Stylish, & Super
- sticker price too high
MB keeps redesigning their cars, so you always have to trade up. But that's good since the style & performance keeps changing over time. It's one of the most computerized vehicles, which is why it breaks down often.

- Looks, Prestige, Quality
- No cloth seats, akward gettting in & out, navigation system, no 350 SL in North America
I rented this car in Los Angeles while on Vacation and drove it all the way to San Francisco. I owned a 1999 500SL and it was a more useable car in terms of every day use because it was easier to get in and out of. The new body style has a very raked windshield which makes it almost like a 1984-96 Corvette to get in and out of. In Europe they get the 350SL which is basically the same car but with cloth seats and a V6 engine. I wish this model was still available here but the 350 left the US market after the 1998 model year. This car is without a doubt the best engineered and best built sports car in the world. You can buy 2 500 SLs for the price of one Ferrari 575 and have money to spare and still have a more substantial car. With the U.S. dollar low today the 500SL is pricey but you will get 10 years of use out of it and it will still look stylish in 2015, the same thing probably cannot be said about a Jaguar XK8 or Cadillac XLR....read morehide

- timeless design, flawless build quality, engineering pioneer, retractable top
- touchy braking (although safe)
Mercedes as of late has been plaqued with a bad rap regarding it's quality. As an owner of an '04 SL500, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. The SL stands apart from all cars in this class. Perhaps the electronics can tricky and sensitive, but the more tricky stuff that's put into these cars, the more potential for glitches. You have to take the good with the bad....nothing's perfect, but this car comes VERY close....read morehide
