2008 MINI Cooper Clubman
There are 7 user reviews for the Base trim shown below
- Great mileage, sporty, relatively roomy interior, fun to drive
- Might be too small for some people
Purchased As New
We've had our Clubman since Sep 08 and love it! We pretty much have the base model- only options are front fog lights, heated mirrors and stability control. On the autobahn we have no problem cruising at the Clubman's top speed of 110 mph. It's fun to drive, handles well and gets great mileage on the highway and around town. We average about 31 mpg with mostly city driving. The cargo area is more than sufficient to hold our groceries and the seats fold down to accommodate larger cargo when needed. The back seat is as roomy as many other small cars, although it would be a little cramped for large adults on a long trip We plan to buy another Clubman before we return to the U.S. next year....read morehide

- Great MPG, fun to drive, cool to look at!
- Cup holders obscure instrument controls, confusing interface with computer.
I used these reviews to help me make my decision, so I thought I should give back to the community as well.
I have had my MINI COOPER CLUBMAN for two weeks. I purchased the BASE MODEL, with the SUNROOF, integrated Ipod control, Bluetooth, etc.
First the good: I am averaging 30mph in the city, and I'm not the most conservative driver. I am 6' 2" and fit very comfortably, I have a 7yo son and a 5yo daughter and our family of four can ride very comfortably across town, etc (not saying I would want to go on a long road trip with the whole family!). It is a very fun car to drive, and very solid on the inside and outside (not a rattle to be heard).
The annoying issues (not deal breakers obviously): Cupholders are snug against the front control panel, and with a cup bigger than a Dixie cup they obscure the controls for the window and doorlocks, and I tend to bump a cup with the manual shifter.
The stereo has decent sound, though not necessarily the best for the increased price of that package.
The bluetooth is not compatible with my phone--the dealer said he had never had a problem before, but when I checked the forums online several people have had this issue (my phone is the SAMSUNG i760).
The onboard computer is accessed through the turn-signal toggle, and it is frustrating/confusing to navigate. The control system for the stereo/ipod/bluetooth system is similarly cluttered and difficult (if not impossible) to use intuitively. I think MINI realizes this as they have a special manual for the radio controls only.
Overall, the fun of driving WAY outweighs any minor negatives, and once you have the computer set-up to your preferences you don't have to deal with it anymore. For the money, I think I really got a good value and would definitely recommend the car to others!

- Great fuel econ, fun to drive
- acceleration not great in base w/o Sport mode on
Last two weekends, the clubman got a workout...Went camping with my two boys. Three backpacks, two coolers and still room for a 14 y.o, an 11 year old and me. Everyone was just shocked.
This past weekend, we took the clubman for an overnight trip to in-laws about 150 miles away. Four people and several bags...all fit. No one complained of being cramped in the car (which we weren't!). Love the car. Towards the end of the return trip from the inlaws, I was getting tired of sitting in the driver's seat but overall a great experience. And 40 mpg to boot!
I've had the car for 6 weeks and just love it (as others do to from the frequent stares)...read morehide

- Excellent fuel economy, performance is great, seats very comfortable, great to park, owned 5 years.
- Knowns, small trunk, rides like a go-cart
Have taken on cross country trips and overall, best performing, comfortable, and fuel efficient vehicle we've owned. It gets a lot of smiles too.

- Sports suspension, interior quality, dual sunroof, push button start, MPG, 5 color ambient lighting
- Acceleration, although sports mode somewhat makes up for this
I've only had this car less than a week & I think I'm one of the first ones to have this car in the area, as I have not seen another one on the road yet. MINI is keeping the demand high by not keeping a lot of these in stock at the dealers (at least in San Diego), which is great for resale value. This car is a blast to drive, is built with BMW quality, and is uber-styish. Must have options are bluetooth & IPOD integration, and the dual pane sunroof. The sports suspension w/the sports package provides incredible handling (almost too good for the base model). I've been getting about 29 1/2 MPG commuting with the manual transmission (still on first tank of gas), but I can easily see getting 35-40 on highway trips.
I was looking to get an automatic cooper S, and ended up with a manual base model clubman. I think ride quality is better with the clubman, as is rear space, without sacrificing the fun-to-drive element of the traditional Cooper. The appeal of the clubman is more wide ranging - more woody style than cutesy. The 6 speed manual is smooth and provides great control. The integrated key with release is very convenient. Overall, I think this is the best bang for your buck if you're looking for a good combination of driver satisfaction, quality, style & fuel efficiency - I don't think there's anything else out there like it. Oh, and I forgot to mention - maintenance is free for 3 years....read morehide

BMW engineering... Loaded with lots of high tech gadgets wrapped in retro styling. Has go-kart type handling the base model acceleration isn't going to give you whiplash but, you don't buy the base model for acceleration. Love the sport seats, totally worth the upgrade! In the 2 weeks of ownership I have seen 40 MPG on a 200+ mile trip. Gotta love numbers like that!...read morehide
