2013 MINI Cooper Countryman

- A Blast to drive
- Hate the RF tires
Purchased As New
bought this on new years eve 2012. base ALL4 auto. traded in my 2011 cooper for more room & more power. Fun to drive. Everything works good except the cement-filled run-flats. Motor does have lots of valve train noise at idle. MPG is about 26 average, with 29 on pure freeway runs. But overall, it's a great little car that I'm always getting asked about when parked somewhere....read morehide

- Performance, Utility
- Interior design

Let me say that I have had four Mini's since 2006. After having my son and his wife visit I decided I needed more room and access than my Clubman S provided. I also took up kayaking and wanted more space. As of this writing I have just crossed 1000 miles on this new Mini. I bought the AWD as I live in Colorado and do some dirt roads. I also got the basics on interior with vinyl because it will get dirty and have wet clothes after kayaking. I also got the bench seat and flat flooring in the back. I did get sunroof and Sirius for road trips which I love, too.
First, the negatives: Mini/BMW hate cupholders. There are none in the back which even the Clubman has. It does have two outlets, finally, though. Glove box is small and interior quality is minimal. I have all black which is a bit dull but functional. My experience with Mini's says reliability and fit and finish will be average, at best. It is built in Britain although engineered in Germany. Can get pricey fast with options and packages. In fact, I cross shopped a BMW X1
The good: Driving! I just went over mountain passes yesterday with five passengers (Yes, 5) and two kayaks on top. I was passing, accelerating cornering and doing some bumpy dirt roads. I had to hard brake at one point and in another car I might have rear ended the guy in front. Brakes did not overheat on long steep downhills, as well. As a guy who loves driving it is heaven to drive this after my corporate Malibu. The turbo really comes in handy at altitude and you have no problems whatsoever. The engine does what you want with minimal lag for an automatic-turbo. The space is great for a Mini and if you are a small car lover as I am the balance between functional space and small car driving is very well done. I love the sporty appearance (I got red with black wheels) and Mini styling. With two kayaks on top it is really cool. I also like the fairly low roof when putting kayaks on top. You can stand in the door sills, if necessary. The seats are very comfortable and the vinyl cleans up easily and is actually very soft. Most people think it is leather. I got the rubber mats which are handy if you live in snow or get beach sand as I do. We hooked up my friend's iPod yesterday and my Zune before that and the basic sound system is surprisingly good. They have also improved the sun roof over my Clubman and improved the soundproofing. It is much quieter, now. I really truly love this car, driving it and the utility for more passengers and luggage...more than I thought I would to be honest.
If you really enjoy driving but need some practical space and utility (as in SUV) this car is heaven. I love the style, how I look with kayaks on top and knowing I have German performance with British classic styling. I am having more fun that I thought in this car.
As a side note: I use these reviews extensively when I consider buying cars. Thanks to all who take the time to write them, and I return the favor....read morehide

- Great fuel economy and cute as hell!
- Not good value for the $, too cheapy!

I got compliments all the time on how adorable this car was! And it got great fuel economy for being an AWD car! But after a while, I just couldn't handle the cheapiness of it. Because of how expensive they are, I had to get a base model, and I never do that. I love sun roofs and heated seats and I didn't get any of those because of my price point. I also had things break like my visor mirror that shouldn't have and a few other smaller mechanical issues. The interior is just very plastic-y feeling and not at all luxury and you're paying for a BMW for goodness-sake! So after 11 months I sold it and for less money bought an AWD car (that I don't have to use premium fuel in) with a panoramic roof, heated seats, remote start, navi and sync....read morehide
