BMW Teases M5 Concept Ahead Of Shanghai Debut

BMW knows what’s riding on the launch of their 2012 M5: get it right, and the car continues a legacy of performance and comfort unmatched by any other automaker's performance sedans. Get it wrong, and the BMW faithful are likely to storm Munich with pitchforks and torches, demanding heads in retribution. No other car in BMW's lineup exemplifies the slogan of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as well as the M5, so any backward steps in performance, style or comfort would be a deadly sin.

BMW M5 ConceptBMW M5 ConceptThe video below isn’t the first leaked by the Bavarian automaker showing the new M5, but it does provide the clearest picture yet as to what the new uber-sedan will look like. BMW refers to the M5 Concept as “highly traditional,” and judging from the lines of the new car, you may be inclined to agree with them. Perhaps the most radical revision from the previous generation is the use of matte paint, and the carefully updated styling is evolutionary, not revolutionary.

New for 2012 is a twin turbo, V-8 engine that replaces the outgoing V-10. Output still hasn’t been finalized, but estimates say the new engine will produce a minimum of 555 horsepower, which makes the last generation’s 500 horsepower seem anemic in comparison.

Look for more pictures and details when the M5 Concept makes its Shanghai debut on April 21.
