Cities with the most speed traps

(Photo: woodleywonderworks | Flickr)
When lead-footed drivers get snagged and ticketed, their downfall might have been passing a speed trap where a cop was using radar or a laser, or maybe the driver passed a speed camera. However, as technology improves traffic enforcement, it is also progressing on the side of the speeder. Now joining the radar detector is crowd-sourced reporting of speed traps, a virtual warning system using the Internet and a mobile app.

This list of the 10 most-active cities for speed traps was compiled by Trapster.com, a community platform  accessed online and via smartphone app, that alerts drivers to traps, hazards and other traffic issues nearby.

Trapster"s list is drawn from the reports of its base of nearly 15 million users. In addition to speed traps and enforcement cameras, "activity" can include road hazards, traffic, school zones, construction zones and locations of roadkill. However, Sean Farrell, product manager for Trapster, says that over 50 percent of the activity reported on Trapster are "live police" speed traps. For each of the following 10 most-active cities, Trapster users entered 3,000 to 4,000 reports in a recent 30-day period.

Note: These slides are taken from Trapster's TrapMap, and symbols indicate red-light cameras, fixed-speed cameras, and known enforcement points.

10. Austin, TX

Law enforcement in the capital of Texas has a reputation for handing out speeding tickets to motorists only one to three miles per hour over the posted limits, says Farrell. "Trapster users have posted on Trapster"s Facebook page that many speed limits drop quickly, and happen to have heavy police ‘speed enforcement" in those areas."

Try living in Baltimore - hardly any speed traps - all because the cops have to respond to all the murders and robberies every day.

You're starting to get speed cameras everywhere now, too. :-)

Yeah, very true. But that is the beauty of those cell phone apps - You can see where they all are. Some GPS's even have that functionality already built in. But if they see you using your cell phone in Maryland while you drive, that is another story.

No, it's not about public safety. It's all about bringing in the $ for the city.

You got that right. If it was for public safety they would be out busting every effin truck / trailer that has crap falling off the back on I-526. They would be patrolling instead of sitting and hiding in a dark corner.
    • Dennis Forrester 3 months ago
or out actually busting the real criminals those that are doing a B an E. or carjackings. Or the real molesters

Shouldn't the cops be more concerned with murderers and rapists and the like?
    • Premium Nova 3 months ago
Yes, but there is no "revenue" in that sort of thing.

They'd have to go out and apprehend murderers and rapists, speed traps are like shooting fish in a barrel. They have a captive audience. On many police cruisers you will see this emblazoned on the doors---"to protect and to serve". When was the last time a copper served you (and not with a subpoena)?

We recently voted ours away. The local college concluded in a study over a few years time there were more crashes from people slamming on their brakes. It was brought to vote by combination of the study and public outcry. Voice your opinion against the cameras you might get them eliminated too.

Every single stop light needs to have a 15 - 20 second visible countdown timer, period.

    5 4 3 2 1 YELOW ! ... 5 4 3 2 1 GREEN !

The benefits WILL outweigh the costs of the timers over time.

... Oh well, can't fix stupid, carry on humans.

Speed traps are usually during morning and afternoon rush hours, because people who work have money to pay for the tickets, "The Cash Cow"

Texas has to be the worst place to drive. While vacationing there I got three speeding tickets in a week for going eight, six and three miles over the speed limits. Talk about highway robbery!
  • Jon R  •  San Jose, Costa Rica  •  3 months ago
Watch out for fake construction zones just over steep hilltops in Illinois! They love to hand out $3,000.00 tickets there to out of state folks! And you have to show up for court in person just to see how much exactly the fine will be. Talk about a bunch of money hungry crooks!

How about writing a traditional article that lists the top ten cities on one page versus a 10-page slide show. Annoying
