The 2015 Ford Mustang is set to play a starring role in the upcoming Need For Speed movie, so it's only right the movie plays a starring role in the ad for Ford's latest pony car.
Directed by Scott Waugh, behind the movie itself, the new Mustang ad plays on its role in the film, as the car of main protagonist Toby Marshall--played by Emmy award-winning actor Aaron Paul. Director Waugh says the Mustang is perfect for its role in the film, as the epitome of the action movie hero car. "The best movie cars combine tons of power, rear-wheel drive, great handling and the ability to be easily flung around corners,” he says. “As we’ve seen hundreds of times over the years--from ‘Bullitt’ to ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’--Mustang fits the bill perfectly."
Waugh adds that it's a car that "represents American culture at its best", perfect as movie protagonist Marshall drives it across the country through the course of the film. Following a spell in prison, Marshall is out to avenge the death of his friend and seek redemption for himself. Okay, so it's not the most original of plot lines, but as several Fast and Furious movies have shown, the right mix of action and characters can often make up for a plot we've all seen before. The ad's tagline, “Do you really think that if you’ve been set up, accused and convicted, a new car can put it all behind you?...Depends on the car!” certainly radiates the desired message.
There's more to the ad than the movie though. It also marks the start of Ford's new campaign for the car, with the hashtag #InaMustang. As you can probably guess, it invites fans and buyers to share their Mustang experiences, and where they could, would and want to go "in a Mustang". Ford has set up a special In a Mustang website where you can share those thoughts, and Ford intends to bring these stories to life through partnerships with influential content creators across social and film networks.
