Most Ticketed Cars

Does what we drive affect how we drive? That’s the question posed by Quality Planning , an analytics company that works with auto insurers. Quality Planning ranked the vehicles most likely to be ticketed, based on the number of moving violations issued for each 100,000 miles driven. The resulting top ten of the list contains a few predictable entries, but it’s not entirely comprised of flashy red sports cars.

But before we begin the list of the worst behaved vehicles, a rundown of the good guys. The top five “cautious vehicles,” that is, the ones with the lowest percentage of violations, are:

5. Buick Lacrosse sedan
4. Kia Spectra sedan
3. Chevrolet C/K 3500/2500
2. Mazda Tribute SUV
1. Buick Ranier SUV

Eight of the top ten cautious vehicles were SUVs or minivans, indicating drivers with passengers (probably of the younger, biological offspring sort) drive more carefully. Click ahead to see the countdown of the worst offenders—or as they are termed in the study, “spirited vehicles,” with commentary from Marty Padgett of TheCarConnection.com and MotorAuthority.com and additional information and insight provided by Quality Planning.

10. Volkswagen GTI Hatchback
Violations*: 178%
Average Age: 40
% Male: 44%

The Volkswagen GTI hatchback is the perennial favorite with younger drivers looking for a sporty, fun German car. “The VW GTI wants you to drive fast,” reasons Padgett. “Why else would they turbocharge it, and give it the most entertaining handling of any Volkswagen, period? Enthusiastic handling attracts enthusiastic owners—and since it's been in production since the 1980s, there are thousands of GTIs out there accumulating points faster than, say, the entire NHL.”

*Violations/100,000 miles driven, expressed as percentage of average.

9. Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG
Violations: 179%
Average Age: 47
% Male: 44%

No surprise here, say the researchers at Quality Planning — This is Mercedes' most powerful convertible makes it very tempting to drive in a spirited fashion. “Mercedes CLK63 AMG - A last-generation Mercedes coupe that's been replaced by the latest E-Class Coupe, the CLK paired sexy styling with huge AMG power, says Padgett. “As with the CLS and SL, these Benz buyers can probably afford a ticket here and there, and aren't worried about a moving violation or parking infraction when there's a sale going on at Restoration Hardware.”

8. Pontiac Grand Prix Sedan
Violations: 182%
Average Age: 40
% Male: 41%

Pontiac's sporty and inexpensive model attracts price-conscious, aggressive drivers, according to Quality Planning. “The Pontiac Grand Prix doesn't have the same street cred as some of the other cars on this list,” says Padgett, “but it has an attitude in its looks that probably has parallels in the people who buy them second and third-hand. Supercharged versions were available, too, so it's not out of the question to rocket up to 120 or 125 mph in one, if it's still in good shape after all these years.”

7. Acura Integra Coupe
Violations: 185%
Average Age: 33
% Male: 60%

This sporty import is popular with younger men, who insurers know to be more risky drivers. Padgett points out that the Acura Integra hasn't even been sold brand-new in America since the mid-1990s.“The fact that the cars still exist, and are still getting so many citations, is a testament to its durability and its spirited performance—and more proof to Honda that it needs to go back to building more cars like this one.”

6. Mercedes-Benz CLS-63 AMG Sedan
Violations: 264%
Average Age: 46
% Male: 58%

Another big and powerful Benz makes the ticketed list. “The Mercedes-Benz CLS just looks gorgeous at speed, so we should applaud those drivers putting it to its highest, best use,” says Padgett. “The CLS 63 AMG is the strongest performer in the CLS lineup--it's the equivalent to BMW's M5 or the Cadillac CTS-V—so it's no surprise its owners exercise every one of its 507 horsepower whenever they can.”

Binky, if you really drive a Yugo, you may be eligible for free counseling and a low interest government loan for the transportationally handicapped. Get help, before it's too late!

I love everyones post. As a police officer, it is not the type of car nor is it the gender, race or age of the driver which earns the ticket, it is the driving habits and actions of the driver which earns the driver a ticket.

Posted by Macbaldy: "Those compact/subcompact cars with 4 cylinders, DOC, and EFI, or Turbo, are popular for street racing--because they'll smoke many gas-eating status cars. They're quick and fast when they've been "enhanced"...

Really? Are you serious, man put down the joint, throw away the anime porn, put down the Wiimote, and go buy a brain. First off, it is DOHC. Second, EFI is a fancy way of saying Fuel Injection. Most cars past 85 have it. Enhanced? What did you do, give it Enzyte? See people Macbaldy is your typical, "I do not know jack about cars except what Dominick Tarreto told me." I bet you tell people that you live your life a quarter of a mile at a time. You Ricers are the reason there are so many problems. You think your 125hp Civic with a $20 Autozone Muffler, $20 Air Filetr, and 500lb Body Kit makes your car travel thru time. Have you even had your "status car" beating Rice Box dyno tuned? Do you know numbers other than what that POS GTech told you? How about torque? Oh wait, I guess we have to sit here and wait for VTech to Kick in?................ Still Waiting......... Granted Silvia Spec 240s, DSMs, Z Cars, RX7s, Supras, and a few others are nice. But remeber, it is better to be thought of a stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. And I do not hate Imports, I had a DSM and a Muscle Car. I hate Ricers!

Second M did not come up in remmber not remeber.

LOL, Oh man. I worked with some ricers that had fogger nitrous systems and fart pipes on their Honda's and claimed they had 12 second cars. We all went to Virginia Motorsporst Park for test and tune one night. They laughed at my stock 20th Anniversary Edition GTI when I ran a 15 flat with the wife in the car with me. Then they got to run. OMG hilarious, on nitrous only two of them were able to get in the 17 second range and one of those guys blew his engine on his second pass. It was freakin hilarious. The Fast & Furious crowd is, in reality, just the Slightly Quick and a Little Peeved.
    • nannrcarguy 10 months ago
By the way EFI is not a fancy way of saying fuel injection, it is 'the' acronym for Electronic Fuel Injection.

Lazy cops spend too much time focusing on speeders, instead of reading[-] the Vehicle Code book. Ticket unsafe speeders, AND BE SURE TO TICKET OTHER UNSAFE BEHAVIORS TOO.
  • Kevin  •  9 months ago
how can my tC not get ticket, when i go up to 120 MPH.... LOL

Any male over 40 caught driving a pink "Pontiac Grand Prix Sedan" (#8) should be ticketed on sight and bit^ch slapped repeatedly.
  • Bud  •  10 months ago
Being in the seat that hands out the ticket, let me make a couple of points. If you are driving in the passing lane and not passing, your a target. If you are moving with the flow of traffic and driving sensibly your most likely OK. If your on a cell phone your a target. If your texting your going to jail for reckless. I only wish I could charge you with attempted murder on that one. If you tell me who you know to try and get out of a ticket, you will definetly get a ticket. If i am in the median and the traffic is coming by at say 5-8 mph over and everyone is behaving, no tickets.
Women between the age of 16 -25 are the worst drivers because they are preoccupied with everything but driving. If I come up behind you and you are not driving the speed limit in the left lane, probably a ticket, especially if you are using the cell phone. Yes Martha S. there is a min speed limit too. But because you wanted to argue and scream had to throw in the obstruction of rightaway and the reckless was for telling me that you were trying to keep everyone at a safe speed. And you were talking to your friend the lawyer when I pulled you over. :-)

I find the % MALE stats interesting - the fact that MALEs were listed, and NOT FEmales, holds a perceived bias that MEN are the major culprits. The Interesting part is that, in 7 out of 10 of the 10 worst vehicles, teh %Male was LESS THAN 50%. Unless "neutered" individuals have their own % reported group, my feeble math skills say that, in the case of the Top 10 Worst Offenders, FEMALE drivers received over 50% of the tickets. Maybe it would be better to list BOTH Male and Female % next time, to avoid the hint of sexual bias in the reporting???
  • Connor  •  10 months ago
Haha my tC is on there. I went 20 over and got pulled over... Cops just dont understand

Thank God for the police; I feel sorry for people who dislike the police. People who say they hate the police wouldn't last a day without them, because we are all helpless sheep who cannot defend ourselves.

this is the reason y i voted 'NO' for more police on the streets. the more police the more likely they will give u speeding tickets. there is NO evidence or any research to support that speeding is dangerous. these cops just give u tickets to raise money for the city. so when you vote, vote no for cops. they're not there to help you, only after you're dead maybe. where were they when children gets killed? no where.

A real all American cop would only give tickets to jap mobiles therefore helping out the USA by making people who support foreign countries pay the USA a little something. Down with japan and down with everybody that buys japanese cars and trucks! obama loves people ho buy foreign vehicles! You are helping the 1/2 breed muslim destroy the USA. Are You proud of yourselves? May YOU have to watch your children starve because You bought japanese instead of American!
