In 1968 American Motors- or more aptly named AMC, began production of its AMX muscle car. Unlike the muscle cars of the time thought, it was considered a unique piece due to its short wheelbase. Unfortunately, the AMX only lived three short years before it was rebranded to cars like the Javelin, Hornet, Concord and Spirit.
This is Don’s drop dead gorgeous 1970 AMC AMX. The last year the original AMX was produced. The near pristine muscle car comes with a Big Bad Orange coating, black wheels, and a bit of a feminine quality to it (you’ll see what we mean). Here’s the full story:
How did you acquire your ride?
My car at the time- a 68 Mustang Fastback had a very tired engine, so I was looking for a new used car. This was in 1975 and muscle cars were abundant and cheap. I test drove a 70 Pontiac GTO Judge, and a 70 Ford Torino Cobra. Found my AMX at Robertson’s Toyota Town in Scottsbluff, NE. I paid $1995 for it.
What drew you to it when you bought it?
It was unique. Not one of the “Big 3.” I loved the “Big Bad Orange” color. Yes that’s the color name. I loved the hood scoop, the 4-speed and the fact it was a 2 seat sport coupe.
Does it have a name?
No, no name.
What do you feel like when you drive it?
This car has lots of power and handles surprisingly well. I love the feeling of the acceleration pushing you back into your seat.
What you would change about your car, if anything?
I’m going to put the original C-stripe back on.
What have you done to make it a bolder ride?
Nothing external except the American Racing wheels. The engine has some basic bolt on modifications. Intake manifold, carb, headers, electronic ignition and some shiny stuff.
Dream accessory for it and why?
5- or 6-speed transmission for better acceleration and fuel mileage.
