Special-Edition Fiat 500 1957 Edition Celebrates Original Cinquecento
Fiat built nearly 3.9 million Nuova 500 models, known as the Cinquecento--Italian for 500--between 1957 and 1975. That original 500 provided Italy with affordable, efficient transportation in the years following World War II, becoming an icon in the process. Now, 57 years after that first Cinquecento rolled off an assembly line in 1957, the automaker celebrates with a new special-edition version: the 2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition.
Based on the current 500 Lounge model, the new 1957 Edition can be painted in one of three colors that hearken back to the original: Avorio (Ivory), Verde Chiaro (Light Green), or Celeste (Light Blue). A Bianco (White) contrast roof is included with the two latter hues. The Fiat 500 1957 Edition is also equipped with retro FIAT emblems, along with a set of 16-inch wheels designed to resemble those of the late 1950s.
Inside, the new 1957 Edition gets a 3-tone treatment rendered in Avorio and Grigio (Gray) with Marrone (Brown) premium leather seats. Accent stitching for the seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel add contrast, and the cabin receives historical FIAT badges. A premium sound system is standard for this new version of the 500.
The engine is a 101-horsepower, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder unit paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic, a Sport driving mode makes best use of the power. Fiat also offers an Eco:drive App that it claims can help 500 drivers to reduce their carbon footprint and save up to 16% on fuel costs. To use Eco:drive, a Fiat 500 must be equipped with Blue&Me Bluetooth connectivity.
According to Fiat, the new 500 1957 Edition arrives at dealerships in the spring of 2014. Prices will be set closer to the car's on-sale date.
