Swiss man installs wood-burning stove in his Volvo

Pascal Prokop has his own solution for Switzerland's exceptionally cold winter: He built a wood-burning stove into the passenger seat of his 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon.

Prokop chose the stove over an electric heater since he can keep the stove burning long after the car is turned off. He told the German magazine Stern, "when I'm tired or have drunk too much, I want to sleep in the car."

Swiss authorities approved the car last August, so now he can cruise the snowed-out roads around Zurich in cozy, smoky comfort. Well, until the flue gets clogged.

My kind of guy, a real problem solver. Wood stoves are not dangerous. Remember the old gasoline fired stoves in VWs?

Big difference between a stove fed from the gas tank and throwing a log in granny's oven.

My "Lil Buddy" camping heater supplies enough heat to keep an entire vehicle warm and is a lot safer. Uses little propane gas bottles, burns 99% pure, and has an oxygen sensor to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Automatically turns off if it gets tipped over. Why would anyone in their right mind put a wood burning stove in their vehicle?

Lionel: I remember in the 1960's I rode around Albany NY in a VW bus for a couple of winters with a German Ever-spark gasoline heater in it. Dealer option, kinda expensive, but it worked OK. Defrost the whole rig in 4-5 minutes.

Our 1960 Corvair had a gasoline heater installed as standard equipment. All automatic, safety controls, the works. Used the equivalent of 2 mpg in fuel when operating. Sure was a blessing in the COLD Maine winters. You just had to be careful to not put the full heat onto the windshield at start-up on the near-zero mornings. In my opinion, that was one of the finest autos we ever had.

Some mornings, after a heavy snow and windy night, we would look out and see only the radio antenna poking up through the drifts in the West Gate Trailer park at Loring AFB Maine.

I wonder if he knows that he can run his car on the smoke from the stove? The technique has been around since WW II.

My wife and I spent the winter of 66-67 in Toronto and our Karman Ghia had no heater. It was surprisingly warm after lighting wooden "safety" matches in the ash tray. Took about 20 matches for my brief commute to campus.

Ditto - except I wonder how much it costs for wood. When I was in Europe it cost a bundle to buy wood for the fireplace.

The first thought which came to mind was......Although no-one ever PLANS on having an auto accident---the happen. With this firebox right next to him......he's condemned himself to a very painful fiery death if he has even a minor vehicle accident or runs off the road into a ditch because of icy conditions.
    Perhaps he's a Bhuddist monk?

I had a Volvo S60-R once. Biggest piece of crap I ever owned. (And I've owned some crappy American cars back in the 1980's, too.) Volvo = Ford rejects.

i can just see him when he loses control on a slick turn, rolls the car and ends up with the hot stove in his lap. He'll probably look and feel like the underwear bomber. Now if he was here in the States, instead of Switzerland, he'd probably sue somebody for damages when that happens.
