Car companys have come so far. My bother had a new 1959 Renult Dophene, it got 39 Miles per gallon way back then. Why so long for them to just now get close to 40 mpg.

My 80 VW Rabbit Disel got 54 MPG. Wish I had bought 3 of them and saved 2 for later, they only cost $4000 then.

The engine is at the wrong end of the car! Should build one like the original, rear engine-rear wheel drive. Then I would buy one.

another hater........ Blame the US government for standard saftey features a US car must have as well as, cost of supplier made parts and expectations of a US owner "there" is the cost of your new car, besides there is absolutely no camparrison on parts content between a Toyota "what u drive" and a European designed and engineered automobile.

Michael, you mean "thank" the U.S. government for required safety features.

If this car is still made in Mexico, the reliablity is still crap.

The VW's are not getting worse mileage with more efficient engines, the EPA keeps revising the test methods. The EPA has twice revised the rating on my car, and I've never even come close to the mileage they predict (18/28), it's darn near 50% better. My worn out 12 year old VW with 225k STILL gets better mileage than was rated on the sticker(24/33) when I bought it new. I get around 26-28 around town and 33-35 on the highway. I have no idea where the EPA gets 18mpg for a 1.8 turbo 4 cylinder. I can't even do that bad with 3 bikes on top and 4 people in the car driving over Vail pass at full throttle.
Go ask a Honda hybrid owner if they get the mileage on the sticker, better yet, look up the class action lawsuit from people that paid extra for the hybrid and get under 30mpg in a civic.
Lastly, try driving a VW Diesel and see how quick it really is with a ton of low RPM torque on hand. You can actually have fun in a car that gets good mileage.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen gets 30 city, 34 combined & 42 combined & weighs 325 more pounds, runs the same motor, has more space and is needs no "manly infuseumness". Dad can take Mom out for Valentines and be cool.........or take the kids to Lowes and everyone has fun.

This car will get more than 39mpg on the highway. I know someone with a Jetta and a new Passat, both with the TDI engines, and they both get over 40mpg highway. The Passat actually gets about 44mpg at 65-70 MPH on the highway.

The stated mileage numbers for the diesels is LESS than they get as opposed to the numbers for gas cars, which is usually MORE than what they get.
