Let me first say that when looking at a car of this price, always remember to set your expectations at the correct level. This is a 15 thousand dollar car. don't expect miracles. I own a 2008 with a 5 spd. manual. I currently have 45,500 miles on it. mixed local and highway driving. The MPG is superb. I average 36-38. The fold down seats are great. We've brought home a large flat screen tv already with it and countless other things. The ipod hook up is great; plus you can hook your phone right up so the aux. will have the call come through your speakers. Basically hands free calling.
I do however wish the gas guage was a needle and not digital. This makes it a little tricky when you're getting low on gas. I would also like to see a center arm rest. But, you can get this via the aftermarket. Yes, the pain job is not the best, I do have a couple of nicks and scratches. Yes, there is road noise at higher speeds. But, again this is not a Mercedes.
So, let's review. This is a great economical car that won't hurt the wallet. You can get 36-38 mpg, the aftermarket is great. you can get a roof rack for your ski's and snowboards; I've even seen people towing with their XD. Also, the hook up for a car seat is quite simple with nice latches. This car is versatile, handles well, even in snow. Overall, great value.

we bought this car almost two years ago now and we still love going for a drive just to drive it has get up and go for a small car and i have got 45 mpg on long highway trips

I bought this car along with my trade in of a '93 Honda Civic. I researched similar cars of this type and budget including the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris and Honda Civic. It was a final contest between the xD and the Civic but I found out that Scion is Toyota and the xD uses the same 2ZR-FE engine as in her more expensive cousin, Toyota Corolla. The fact that my last Civic died on me at a red light in a crime infested neighborhood during after hours tells me much about Honda's true reliability.
Beside the odd appearance of the exterior design which makes the xD look small, on the inside it has alot of room especially in the back. I like the fact that the car sits higher that average sedans which lets me see more and farther. The interior is dark and may be hard to see at nighttime. The gauges on the xD are simplistic as its only gauges are the speedometer and tachometer. Everything else is digital. However, Scion has a policy called 'pure pricing' so their cars come with many standard features that you may have to haggle with on other vehicles. It's kind of like 'red tag event' with GM cars.
After reading other xD reviews, I find it very funny and ironic that the reviewers insult the Scion xD about road noise, limited visibility, handling, acceleration, and other minor details. To answer their insults, I suggest these owners inquire about aftermarket mods. If they are still complaining, get a better job and buy a Lexus IS250 instead of rating the xD as a Luxury sedan!!!
Finally, I want to emphasize in this review that out of all the minor complaints me and other xD owners complain about, the xD is a Toyota Corolla hatchback and is alot for your money in terms of reliability....read morehide

good fuel economy

When I drive the car with the 2 front windows up and the rear window down and going over 40 miles per hour, the windows start to vibrate and it makes a noise so unbearable that i must roll the windows back up. Driving with the windows down is so relaxing but with this car, you can't because the windows will start to vibrate and make that disgusting sound. The sound isn't just annoying, it actually hurts!
Dealer don't want to do anything about this.

I love my scion xd!!!! It is my first car, I got it in late July. I only drive it to and from college and around town (my town is small). I get great gas mileage (37 mpg) even when it was $4 a gallon (35 mpg). For someone like me, who is short to begin with it was important to me that I found a car that I was able to control and feel comfortable in without feeling overwhelmed and this car is it for me! It is the perfect size for someone like me who is only 5 ft tall. The comfort of the car is also great, as the seats, in front and back are very comfy. The a/c & heater work great (needed for Fl weather) and the Radio/ CD player is great too. The headlights are very bright while driving at night (even when not on the brights) and the backup lights at night are amazing. Overall I love this car, and am def. happy with my selection and hope to own another after my car is past her time....read morehide

best buy on the market, hands down. will probably run forever and at the least almost certainly outlast the car payments. BUY ONE! ive got 6000 miles on it now.. its just starting to feel "broken in" easy to get the kids in and out of, perfect for car seats and very safe to boot.

I've owned the xD for 2 months now and it is so worth the money. I looked at the other small sporty, fuel efficient cars and nothing came close to the Zip in acceleration as this, yet maintain the 32/33 miles per gallon as stated. This should be a top 5 contender in my eyes. I'm 6 ft 3 in and I fit in the front seat with no problem. Plenty of front seat leg room for the big people! The standard transmission is 5 speeds and is geared perfectly for the need to get on a freeway to merge with traffic doing 65+ mph. You really have to test drive this car....read morehide

I've been driving this car for over a week now and there are so many things that I love about this car. It comes with power window, great sound system which includes IPOD or MP3 hookup, audio control on the steeling, AC, and cruise control. The gas mileage is great too.

I’m only 4”11 and weight 95 lbs, in most cars I feel so short but not the XD. I feel slightly higher which allowed me to see better and make me feel safer. I could see so many things that I don’t normally see with my other vehicles. I also get a lot of compliments on the cute design of the car; this is a very cute car. This car is short enough which makes it easy to park almost everywhere.

I only have one problem with my XD, you cannot open the trunk without unlocking all the doors. This is the only drawback. But overall, this car is perfect for a petite woman like me. For once, I don’t feel small while driving this car....read morehide

Great MPGs, Excellent Sound System, Loaded w Standard Features, Standard 16" tires

I've owned the xD for a year now, (20k miles so far) and I have no complaints. I average anywheres from 29 to 36 mpgs driving up and down Texas.
You also sit much higher then most vehicles, improving your sightlines and overall feel of safety.
Larger 16 inch tires compared to all other vehicles in its class.
The upgraded sound system has built-in preouts so it was very easy to add a subwoofer. And the i-pod is a great option. i didnt think it would be a big point, but it definatlely is.
Roomy enough for the roadtrips with 4 adults.
Very fun to drive.
And the no-haggle pricing made this an easy pick that i'm very happy about. No regrets.
Only complaint would be that the headlights do not stay on durning the day....read morehide
