The WORST about the for2 is all the other az-hole drivers around me. They treat me like non-existant, cut me off within an inch, tailgate to witin a foot or just plane trying to merge into me. Obsene gestures, curses, Hi-Beams, un-friendly stares... you name it I had it all with this car that I never got while driving a VW Golf.
Here I am just driving my car along the road at traffic speed, what did I do to deserve all the aggression and negativity??
I reserved and waited 10 months for mine. It was great fun to drive but soon I realize every expansion joint hurts my butt and I start to suspend my lower body upon approaching any slightest bump on the road. It has surprising amount of space inside for cargo and passenger. The 3 cylinder provide meager 70 horses but plenty for a 1800lb car. The tranny feel like a newbie driving stick shift, head nods and bobs lots. Brake worked wonderful and saved me many times. On highway speed the wind can move you around a bit but the handling was very predictible so it cancels out the scary factor.
Get this as a 2nd car for pleasure or weekend if you have spare cash but not for long trip. It will do it but doesn't mean it should! Out of the 2 years 16000mi I owned her there was not one reliablity issue with her. I did trade her in a little while back because I am running out of butt for her to trash....read morehide5 out of 5 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- 47mpg, paddle shifting 5-speed, convertible top operates at any speed
- Cons
- Prefers premium fuel, can be pushed around in high cross winds

I've had my 2008 smart cabrio for 6 months and I love it! For $12K I got a fuel efficient, two-seat roadster with 6,000 miles on the clock. I have owned several small cars over the years, from the VW Bug and Rabbit, to the Honda Civic, and Ford Focus. Yes, this is the smallest yet, but my 6'-2" frame has plenty of room and with safety features from Mercedes-Benz (ABS, traction control, stability control, front & side air bags, S-Class steel frame) I feel safer than I did in any of my past cars. I can raise and lower the convertible top at any speed which is great living on the Oregon coast where the weather can change several times during a drive. This car loves to buzz through the canyons and the paddle shifters let me switch from full auto to manual control of the 5-speed without taking my hands from the wheel.
I have never owned a car that makes me smile every time I drive it. I would happily buy another one....read morehide5 out of 6 people found this review helpful.

i work for a company who has 5 of the smart for two , we have had problems with all of them , they bought them not knowing what kind of trouble they would be , and you have to take back to a dealer to get them fixed , it would have been a better deal to get 5 ford focus instead, with the same gas milage , it is not that great ,compared to all the rest that claim to get more gas milage ....read morehide

- Cons
- $20,000 for a toy car?? TWENTY thousand???

Smart has a lot of gall asking $20 grand for a tiny little death trap. Wife forced me go go look at Smart cars.
Unbelievable. WHO's buying these ridiculous little things? No room, no power, unsafe??? $20 grand will buy a LOT more room and safety on a lot of other brands. Took a test drive and felt like I was on the Disneyland autopia. I felt vulnerable and exposed. I just don't get it....read morehide1 out of 5 people found this review helpful.

I love the Smart Fortwo!! It is such a cute car. I believe people expect too much from this car. This little car was made for eco transportation, not luxury ride & luxury gizmos. Yes, the ride is a little rough, but I'm a country girl whom grew up with 4x4's (when they actually rode like a 4x4,) so I don't mind. As for safety, the steel cell is very safe....similar to a jeep roll cage. And let's face it, any small car vs SUV will be nasty. Life has choices, and I would love to spend my life driving a Smart Fortwo....read morehide

It is interesting to read how some people think this car is great. Look at the facts, it is the smallest lightest car on the market yet it is still nowhere near the mileage leader. It is the smallest lightest car on the market but nowhere near the cheapest. Not sure why someone would want to buy a tiny car if it weren't about price or mileage and sorry it is just flat out ugly.
Even worse, all you who have said this is a safe car are kidding yourselfs. In initial testing the car did well but these were not in real world test. They did test such as a 40 mph crash into a stationary barrier. Most times in a head on collision it involves 2 cars traveling at 40 mph and a much greater impact. A year later they did do real world test against other smaller cars and the results were devastating. In a 40 mph head on test with a Mercedes C class (slightly larger but still considered a small car) the Smart Car was launched into the air spun around 1 1/2 times and crashed back down. It doesnt take a genius to imagine the results if it had been a full size truck or SUV.
I work in rescue and dread the day we have our first accident with one of these cars....read morehide5 out of 12 people found this review helpful.

I love my smart - but it IS a 2 seater car. You can put a load of groceries in the back, or backpacks, whatever! There is ample headroom for my 6'2" husband who normally drives a crew cab 4x4. It is FUN to drive once you get used to its odd shifting. I LOVE MY 2009 SMART FORTWO PURE!

- Cons
- Poorly built, quirky transmission, noisy as a propeller airplane

Total trash. I own a 2009 that's wrought with electrical, transmission and noise issues. Totally hollow frame that echos every bump on the road right through you. For a "city car" this transmission doesn't know what to do under 20 MPH. Up, down, down, up, double shifts and triple shifts. Manual setting for the transmission is unpredictable, can you imagine that? - Manual even has problems. The "auto stick" tranny has left me stranded twice as the car would not go into gear at all...no forward no reverse and you can't do anything about it. This lead to a furious blow up with Smart and Mercedes on a conference call. I had to initiate the conference call as Smart "could not reach the service manger" at Mercedes. Oddly enough, I could reach her first try with Smart on the phone. Customer support is non existent unless you scream and holler to get a supervisors supervisors. Even then good luck, I never got a call back for my issues. The "average" Mercedes dealer which sells them in NJ treat you like dirt because your not bringing a $50k car in for service. I've never received one survey, call or otherwise after the sale. Even my GF gets a recorded happy birthday call for her 2008 used Nissan (different dealer). I gave them a chance, and I'm not a rich man so I'm stuck with this POS SmartCar until my personal economy gets better...then it is outta here. I wish I had the money to blow it up on video, but I'll probably have to use it for the piddle trade in value it will probably afford me. Mine has 20k miles on it and I really don't think it's going to make it to 50K...it just feels like it's going to fall apart....read morehide
