2005 Subaru Baja User Reviews
- $8,980 - $9,831
- Efficient, Powerful, Aggressive, Comfortable, Stylish, Useful
- Big people do not belong in rear seats
It would be hard to compare this vehicle to anything else because it stands alone. Many SUV's are starting to add truck beds to their line, but they are large, top heavy, unwieldly, and ultimately are not as good as a king-cab truck. Enter the baja. From the outside you will notice that this vehicle is armed like a truck: raised rear, aggressive rear axle, AWD, recessed offroad lights, truck bed with functional tie-down hoops and roof top cargo bars. The strangest thing is entering the car, as you step up into it, suddenly you are transported to the world of sports sedans. The engine is hot (the turbo is powerful), the automatic transmission is very aggressive with its "Power-shift" option (again, the turbo), and the turning radius is ludicrously small (2-lane U-turn). Yet the fuel efficieny is also unprecedented- 20-25 is a modest estimate. From the inside, you would never imagine that you are riding in a truck like vehicle. The seats are stylish and very comfortable (good lower back support), the steering wheel is well placed and the overall performance really makes you think you are in a sports car. I have driven sports cars before, and the Baja demands to scream around corners, it hugs them like nothing in its class. There is nothing top heavy about it either (unlike the prior mentioned SUV hybrid nonsense), when you hit a corner it hugs the road with the AWD system, and when you hit the gas and the turbo kicks in you are literally pressed back into your seat.
This car is a thrill to ride, and is the most useful vehicle I have ever driven. It can accomadate 4 passengers, 2 bikes, and a full bed of lumber or furniture, and still give aggressive acceleration and handling. If you are thinking about buying this car, DO IT. There has been talk about this model being discontinued, so get it while you can! It stands in a class of its own, and is definitely cheaper and better designed than any competition on the market....read morehide

- fuel economy, very comfortable, easy to park, easy to maneuver
- can't think of something
i fell in love with this car for the reason that it looks like a pick up truck and yet i feel like am driving an SUV. it serves a double purpose. i can use it to move big things and at the same giving a ride for other family members. it's also good for long driving. i don't own one of your car but i rented one on Maui, Baja that was and boy was it so powerful not to mention it's an automatic. what's more if am driving a 5-speed i could have gone all the way to haleakala crater (almost 10 thousand feet high above sea level)....read morehide

- great all around sport utility
- not for evarybody tall pepole may have a prob with headspace
couldnt decide weather I wanted a car are a truck, with gas PRICES CLIMBIN,..... then I spoted a Baha, and test drove a turbo, I fell in love with it, pepy isnt the word, more like powerful and fun, diffrent but still conservitive. I have been a truck and suv guy all my life, but always wanted a sports car, now I have the best of both worlds, gas milege is good 23 to 27 , and you can get a canopy for it, so my dog loves it to, dont no why not many are being sold, but I think with the future of gas prices that may change, this thing is not for evarybody like tall pepole would have a problem fitting in it, im 5,9 and it fits perfect, I snowboard and kayak and this thing does what I need it to. love all the options the turbo comes with, the cover for the back is nice and stays dry even when I wash it and spray the hose at the side of the lid, if your under 6,2 and adventuress, spontanios, and like to be different, then check it out its fun but conservitive to,...read morehide

- Very Good handling, quiet and smooth accelaration and fast too!
- Cup holders are in bad position
Excellent power distribution and all 4 wheels. Bad placed for the cup holders, keep bumping with driver side.

- Great handling, good fuel economy, fantastic versatility
- Back seat could be a little roomier.
I've heard that Subaru calls this vehicle their Leatherman and that sums it up perfectly. The cargo bed appears small but with the tailgate down and the bedextender I've had plenty of room for hauling trees, mulch, stone and lumber. I've even been able to move everything out of army quarters where I'd been living for two years in on e single haul. This is the best vehicle I've ever owned!...read morehide

- Utility, Handling, Performance
- Limited Options- see below.
I knew that I would buy this vehicle when I saw it. I used to live out west and fell in love with pickups. The utility can't be beat. I no live in the DC area and have come to appreciate the comfort of a sedan. As soon as a found a vehicle that combined these features with sporty performance I was hooked! The standard Turbo model will handle all light-utility an average user would need, and provides a fun commuter and kid taxi moms and dads would love.
The down side: I found some of the options I was looking for, but they are not nearly as numerous as for some of Subaru's other vehicles. It needs a few more "off-road" bits as the only protection offered so far is a rear-diff skidplate... A set of grill bars might be useful here.
The upshot to Subaru is that it has developed a bit of a cult following, and for several of the quirky vehicles there are creative individuals out there with a bit of mechanical knowhow that can do a very good job of fabricating what you are looking for... with the advent of the Forester STi, I'm sure someone is trying to figure out how to wrangle this powerhouse into a Baja as we speak....read morehide

- Handling, Fuel Economy, Standard Features Loaded.
- Bed Space, Backing up visibility
Have had this vehicle for a few weeks and love all of the aspects, Decided on a Sport/Auto over the Turbo for economy/personal reasons but must say that the Sport does quite well for my purposes. The power is more then adequate for a 4-cylinder in my opinion. Just drove it on a wet and curvy road and the Baja stuck to the road like a sports car I used to have! I feel very safe in this vehicle..Interior is straightforward and good quality.. Like the sunroof and power windows/doors that come standard. Overall, I would highly recommend this vehicle....read morehide

- Great OffRoad Vehicle , Awsome Interior space, great drive, great handling, overall safest car/truck
- Riding up steep hills the engine doesnt seem to want to put in the extra horses,
Im only 20 years old and i bought my first brand new Baja in jan 05 ive taken it offroad in the mountains, on the beach and just into my pasture to have a little fun....great truck all around! the only complaint i have is the uphill sluggishness. its not to bad but when your used to driving in the valley of California its a little bit wierd. Other than Mountains, Have fun because i DEFINANTLY RECOMMEND THE BAJA TO ANYONE. (i better get a free oilchange for this) lol....read morehide

- Great off-road vehicle!! Also great, fun, fast, car on streets.
- Only problem is small interior space.
There is not much interior space. But when I say this I am referring to cargo space. I am 6' tall and fit just fine in the driver's and passenger's seats. I would not want to try and fit in the back seats if someone as tall as me was up front though. I have the '05 Baja Sport with 5 speed manual. I have had this car for 6 months now and taken it off roading numerous times. I even used it to feed horses by putting the feed in the truck bed and driving in the pastures after a recent rain. There was up to 2 feet of mud in a lot of the places and I didn't get stuck even once! I used my baja in place of the ATV with a small trailer normally used because it kept getting stuck! This car/truck is awesome and very versatile. I love this vehicle!...read morehide
