- great fun factor
- none, as long as you know what you're getting
Purchased As New
The thing with the STi is, you have to know what you're getting. You're getting a car for people who enjoy driving, who like manual transmissions (no AT version), who don't mind paying for premium gasoline at 22-ish mpg. It's not a luxury caddy, it's meant to feel close to the road. "Go-carty" is how one of my friends described it.
I bought this car because I wanted something fun, but at the same time I have special winter needs. I drive into the mountains of Pennsylvania once a month, and sometimes it gets nasty in the snow. I didn't want a rear wheel drive vehicle like a mustang--too dangerous on icy mountain roads. I never drove a manual but didn't mind learning--although it's not for everyone.
The SI drive of the STi is awesome. It's basically a turbocharger setting that gives you more or less "umph". At the low "gas conserving" end (kind of a laugh at 22 mpg) it's a relaxing ride, great for driving with an in-law passenger, or in the rain. The normal "sport" mode is good fun and not too rough on the gas. "Sport Sharp" is essentially like a race car. With the all wheel drive, you can blast off like a rocket! I haven't tried it in the snow yet, of course, but the AWD handles great in the rain.
The STi in general and the 5-door in particular doesn't have that muscle car look to it, but it's clear from the hood scoop that it means business and still looks distinctive. No one in their right mind would call it "roomy", but I can fit 4 friends in, provided they aren't too particular about personal space. And the hatchback is great, if not as spacious as my old Accord.
As for folks that get tickets...well, can't help you there. I like the power and the control--it doesn't bother me if I'm not allowed to do 90. There are raceways where you can take it to do that, if that's your bag....read morehide
