This is the first Subaru that I own, and I love it! The ride quality is comfortable, the CVT is quiet yet responsive, and the overall feel of the vehicle is solid.
While the MPG thus far have been good, I am not sure if this car will achieve 36mpg highway. Thus far (at 1500 miles) I am averaging 30-31mpg with almost all highway miles (anywhere between 65-80mph). Interestingly, the best MPG that I have seen was at faster interstate speeds. The computer routinely overestimates the mpg by 2mpg.
I was a BIG CVT skeptic (having driven a manual for the last 10 years), however I have since warmed up to the CVT. Acceleration feels adequate (for a 2.0L engine), and engine noise is fairly minimal. That said, this is NOT a powerful car. You will notice some engine strain when passing a higher speeds, especially if the car is fully loaded.
I cannot describe the feel of driving this car all that well, other than to say that it seems to stick to the road. The AWD is seamless in its activation (having already driven across some snowy and icy roads), and the braking distance is incredibly short. This is the safest-feeling small car that I have ever driven. I've already hit some scary weather across WY and CO, and this car handles snow and ice well!
This car is probably best suited for someone who needs a good, safe AWD commuter.
